They always recast and change characters in the show...I didn’t notice that until my 4th rewatch...

Adriana’s friend “Danielle” (the FBI mole) was originally played by Fairuza Balk. When the role was eventually recast with Lola Glaudini, they re-shot the scene in the department store where Adrianna first meets Danielle. You can still find the original broadcast version on YouTube though.

I’m curious about the full story behind this. It’s said that Fairuza wasn’t interested in a recurring role. Seems obvious that when the character is introduced in the finale of season 3 that she will continue into season 4 - otherwise that FBI plan makes no sense. Why hire an actress who won’t want to return?

For a straight-up recast, yes there are a few, including Dr Freidman and Barbara Giglione (younger Soprano sister). The pilot had a couple of differences but its expected of a pilot.
Edit - Dam Grimaldi also played the Parisi twins so re-cast twice. Edit - Angie Bompensaro played by two actors. Edit - Agent Ciccerone was played by two actresses as the original one from the end of the season episode (Fairuza Balk) didn't want to be in the next series and the scene was re-shot for DVD and subsequent airings.
