I have a shameless habit of checking what dayshift have thrown in their bins. F for the fallen

cut off tips, work on grinder - can be reused!

AutumnPwnd•

Came here specifically to say this.

I repurpose all my old/broken tools.

51
drphrednuke•

I grind old screwdrivers into a wedge to use for prying things apart. Good screwdrivers should never be used for prying.

6
AutumnPwnd•

I turn mine into Awls, or regrind them into smaller slotted bits, or take the (nice) handles off and use them for files or other tools.

ThunkAsDrinklePeep•

Then weld on two halves of an old hammer! /s

The all new pulley-whacker, patent pending

Snatch n Attacher?

1
Diplomold•

I would put this on the grinder for sure. But I would frequently dip it in water to keep it cool so as not to ruin the heat treatment .

2
Fuzzybo•

Try a low speed grinder, they don’t overheat your metal quite so easily.

2
F-21•

Yeah but removing that much material will heat it up regardless.

The most night shift thing ive ever heard is "I spend my shift digging thru the trash". But seriously nice find

Those 12 hours go by slow, okay?

Alternatively: the makings of an HR rep

How else do you get food when all the restaurants are closed?

1
BoniBoniGoni•

I do exactly the same, you cannot believe how many decent tools i found in the bin at work

53
TobyChan•

The tips look knackered to my untrained eye.

18
cheesiologist•

Yes, but look at how much UN-knackered jaw is left.

50
theunixman•

Oh yeah the nice thing about metal tools is they're metal. And as long as you can see metal you can grind away until it's the right shape again.

22
cheesiologist•

Well, A right shape.

26
bctucker83•

You could even weld material back on and then reshape it if you wanted to. But I’d probably grind down to a new shaped end and leave them like that myself

Its_Actually_Satan•

Lol makes me think of Mr grandfather. When his dementia finally got bad enough that we had no choice but to put him in a home we found an obnoxious amount of screwdrivers. He had grinded them all down into ice picks. Pretty sure he did that to keep busy and hide from my grandma lol

MontEcola•

We have grinding wheels and metal files to repair this. I often modify the tool that got tossed to make it into something even better. My best tools are things I made from cast off bits turned useful.

Oh, and if you happen to find a cast off chainsaw blade, I have a use for it. Send it my way.

Pleased_to_meet_u•

Oh, and if you happen to find a cast off chainsaw blade, I have a use for it. Send it my way.

What are you doing with used chainsaw blades?

6
LoopsAndBoars•

What is a chainsaw blade?

3
MontEcola•

Cut them and grind them into cutting tools. Knives, chisels, etc. Then make a handle.

1
series-hybrid•

I think the most common tossed tool is a #2 Phillips screwdriver once it gets slightly rounded off. I have ground the tip into a flat screwdriver, or a prybar, among other things...

5
modefi_•

Oh that? That's my stabbin' screwdriver..

What about this one?

Oh that? That one there's my other stabbin' screwdriver.

2
MontEcola•

They make a decent awl. Just a few moments at the grinder.

1
StudiousPooper•

Your best tools?

1

Depends on how you define best i guess. I made a Subaru specific transmission tool that's damn near impossible to source and was $250 the one place I did find it. Built a copy from an old clutch and some heavy flat stock. Best? IDK, but it saved me a ton of money, worked great, and made me feel pretty smart.

I’ve found that some Knipex’s tools are very weak. My electronic knips broke trimming the end of thin stranded wire to make the wire flush. Thank god for their warranty. I figured for the $32 price that they’d hold up to anything. Just seems like the price means they’re more fragile.

14
Frequent-Sea2049•

Let me guess. You pleasure your self with snap on slip pliers.

5

Duh. It’d be a crime not to. Want to watch?

10
Fryphax•

Throwing away a lifetime warranty tool. How wasteful.

10
mattpizz27•

Aren't knipex life time warranty?

8
Shifty0x88•

Just means they are blunt nosed now 😂

5
Gumbo_Osmosis•

I just read a review about a guy on amazon complaining of his knipex pliers breaking like this He said he thought knipex was sending amazon their crap pliers or counterfeit and telling people not to buy them there. He also shared a pic of his that were broken similar to this. He said he wasn't abusing them.

3
sponge_welder•

Amazon is notorious for fake stuff, I would buy tools almost anywhere else before buying them on Amazon

2
say_the_words•

We had to get some stuff off Amazon during lockdown that we would normally never buy online. I'm convinced I got counterfeit Levi's 505's and some New Balance shoes. They fell apart within 6 months. That was light use to because we weren't going anywhere because of Covid.

3
Gumbo_Osmosis•

Yeah man I didn’t really realize that. I’m not taking the chance anymore.

1
-Vault-tec-101•

Looks like you’ve got a new (to you) pair of flat nose pliers

2
guttoral•

I found so many MIG pliers at trade school kids would chuck in the hopper because they wouldn't open or close. Nothing a little WD-40 couldn't fix.

A shame.

2
BlinginLike3p0•

Random question. I see knipex at work and at home depot way more now than 5 years ago. Has the quality fallen off at all? They seem to be a more standard brand now.

2
halcykhan•

Their US distribution has gotten much better. And tool truck brands like Snap-On and hardware store brands like Craftsmen have had quality drop off significantly.

So mid to high tier brands like Knipex, Channel Lock, Wera, and Klein have become the go to

They get fucked up, they just get shorter

1
No-Restaurant2802•

Never throw away a tool unless is fucked fucked is my motto

1
freewave07•

If it ain’t fucked up, fix it until it is

1
lickmybrian•

When I did nights it was exactly the same... for some reason there will always be beef between the two shifts. Fuc**n day walkers couldnt keep a tool clean if their life depended on it

Salvageable.
