Mom's car

Poem

You used to sit in this seat, hold this wheel, and drive this car.

Now that you're no longer with us, it's been handed down to me.

That's not all you've passed on, though.

Your love, kindness, and generosity, too, now live through us.

I'll gladly take them all with open arms.

So simply stated and genuine. It seems each word is perfectly placed.

I especial like the line

“Your love, kindness, and generosity, too, now live through us.”

Thank you for sharing

Hello!

Firstly I thought it was very sweet and touching.

Concise too, which is good for me who tends to get lost easily.

I enjoyed the comparison of the possessions she has left you, a physical car and more importantly her good nature.

The 'no frills' start of the car does strengthen the impact of your other example and despite it just being a basic old automobile, it's handled with the same delicacy and love, evident from the first line.

Thanks for taking the time to share your work, keep it up!

The message is very sweet and uplifting! The first line, “you used to sit in this seat, hold this wheel, and drive this car” carries nostalgia and beloved memories. Great poem! <3

I really love when simple poems like this are still impactful.

I love the thought of mom's personality being left as gifts. Beautiful poem and I'll definitely read this again. :)

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

I love the simplicity of this poem. When it comes to grief and loss, I find that prose is the most effective way to express my feelings around it. The thing I particularly enjoy about this poem is that I can feel the gratitude for someone's life, rather than just the pain that surrounds it. Not just for the things inherited after this person's death, but also the characteristics of this person. When my step mom died, I felt so sad that someone with as beautiful as a heart is no longer with us, but I do everything I can to be like her; compassionate, generous, and unconditionally loving. I never let negativity change those things about me, because I want to be like her in those ways. I love this poem and how well it expresses that type of admiration. Thank you for sharing. I would love to read more of your poems.

Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words!

Your stepmom sounds like a lovely lady, and I suspect she'd be pleased to know you're trying to live in a manner that reflects what you admired in her.

I really appreciate you sharing that :-)

For a second I thought your mom was shitting in the seat, now that I re read it.

I can really relate to this one. I inherited my Pop Pop’s car after he passed. It’s my first car and I’m getting my license in a week, but ever since he passed I’ve been wondering if I’ll ever be able to live up to who he was. But this beautiful poem made me feel a lot more optimistic. Thanks!

My pleasure!

FYI, we're all human - even our parents.

There's never anybody to "live up to."

All we can ever do is be our best selves.

For example, I don't try to "live up to" my mom.

She and I are different people.

All I can do is be the best version of me.

That incudes much of what I saw in her.

You are not your dad.

If you aim to "live up to" him, you never well.

Remember that he was flawed, too.

He had is strengths, sure, but he had his weaknesses.

Take from his strengths and be your best you.

I suspect that's what he would want you to do :-)

Writing about a lost parent is one of the hardest things to do, the courage and power comes through.

This beautifully illustrates how one simple thing in life, such as a used car, can carry so much value and meaning. Like a bridge into so many memories. Thankfully my mother is still with us for now, guiding and nourishing and loving us through our failures and successes. I want to write this poem down and save it for the day I take a dusty leather bound journal or some other gift from her out of a box and get this same connection you are alluding to in the poem. Thank you so much for putting this one out there
