I Am Afraid

Poem

I am afraid

Not of death, no death is something I would face if it meant the protection of others, though still

I am afraid

I am afraid of a danger neither the strongest, the quickest or the smartest can escape from

I am afraid

I am afraid of a demon

A demon that grows stronger with every person I help

A demon that I am too afraid to face

A demon that creeps into my mind as I help others expel it from theirs

A demon none could possibly imagine would ever creep into my mind

I am afraid

I am afraid that if I try to get help

It would flee my mind and creep into the minds of others

And so I let myself be cursed with this demon, and be helpless as it drags me down to depths I cannot possibly fathom

For I will not let others be taken down by it

Because I am

Afraid

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

Please take care of yourself, and do not be afraid of seeking help, at least. The line about helping others I can really relate to. They say helping others will help us feel better about ourselves, but it's not true, even though obviously it's the right thing to do. Oftentimes it means neglecting our own self care even more. I'm not quite understanding the purpose of the last three lines together, because I would think that not getting help would be more detrimental to others than getting help. Anyway, you have touched my heart with this poem. I understand the paranoias and the fear.

There's something about this poem which resonanted with me. I absolutely love the metaphor you used throughout. And the way you repeat "I am afraid," tells the intensity of the fear. The way you end the poem, is just incredible. I think it carried a lot of weight to it.

Anyway, I am assuming this is how you personally feel. If so, I can't imagine how painful it must be being in that state. You don't have to deal with it alone. You really, really, really don't have to, and should not. My DMs are always open if you just want to vent to a stranger. But I'd encourage reaching out to people you trust.

Have a good one, mate :D

Pretty gloomy poem. I really like how you defined your idea of fear as interpreted by a demon, a demon that eats you on the inside, feeding in a way on the demons of others, once released they become yours. It's a gesture of kindness to help someone but kindness itself is ambiguous and can often act as a mask to hide something else in this case the fear of facing demons reality or even you in other words. I would interpret the last part of the poem not as your words but of the demon in you somehow forces you to believe something else so that it can still be set free.I really like your poem i a bit afraid to know how you felt when you write it, good job and take care mate

A nice buildup for a worthy villain, that is fear.

Maybe i’m just emotional, but I definitely cried when i read this. i tend to take a liking to poems that repeat the same stanza over and over. “I am afraid” was the one.

Thanks for sharing

This poem struck a chord deep in my heart, and it is freakishly relatable. And I don‘t think I’m the only one who felt a connection to this poem. Thanks for sharing it. The structure is an odd one but somehow works so well for it, and so does the lack of punctuation. It’s very rare that it’s done tastefully. The metaphors are clear, and so is the message. Sometimes it’s hard to be the hero.
