Why is our media so partisan?
I mean Radio NZ - they seem to give Chris Bishop a lot of air time even though he is only a list MP - why dont they just give hima fricken job? Luxon is everywhere too... Anything relating to the PM or the govt is negatively framed... Balance, fairness and factual reporting should be key parts of journalism but these seem to be sorely lacking in New Zealand, why?

Is this satire? Do you think a more partisan approach is to not allow the opposition air time and only report on things that paint the govt in a positive light?
If your problem is with RNZ being too biased towards *National* then I'm afraid you've just got brainworms.
It's funny because RNZ holds everyone's feet to the fire regardless of what colour tie they wear but when their guy isn't given soft ball questions they think they're maliciously out to get them.
Yeah RNZ isn't the absolute bastion of journalistic integrity that some on this sub like to believe, but they are generally pretty good at keeping their political coverage balanced. I'm sure politicians from both sides of the aisle dread any interview with Kim Hill.
The high amount of whinging about RNZ from Nat and Labour supporters is probably a good sign that they do a decent job of holding the flame to both. Naturally the incumbent government is going to be on the receiving end a lot more. Hence the cries of "red radio" when the Nats are in power and Labour supporters that reckon RNZ is slipping to the right when it's their go.
The last piece I heard with Luxon was an interviewer getting annoyed because he wouldn't answer the bloody question.
I couldn't do that job.
Yeah Luxon isn't particularly very good at the non-answer. Probably to be expected given his inexperience, but an election campaign is going to be pretty rough if he can't improve. The absolute best in the business, and I mean this neither as an insult or a compliment, is the PM.
Luxon could learn a lot from her interview skills. Other than over-using the "reject" thing a bit too much, she's excellent at both the non-answer and stalling for time to reduce the amount of questions. Also helps that she's very across the detail so can flesh out the non-answer quite well - avoids an easy "you haven't answered the question" from the reporter because it almost feels like she has.
No brainworms here. Do some reading on the principles of journalism. Ideally the 4th estate should provide both sides of a story and let the public make up their minds. Sadly we seem to be getting very one sided reporting - Often involving National.
Google is your friend here....
I don't know how old you are but Opposition MPs always get more airtime no matter what party is in Opposition. They're way less busy and more available for comment. Govt Ministers try to reduce their media appearances as much as possible and Opposition MPs try to increase their appearances. It's just the way it is.
Idk dude if you're genuinely thinking RNZ is biased towards National then you may have to get those brainworms checked out.
Opposition MPs will whore themselves to journalists for sure, I saw it happen when I worked in a newsroom, but that isnt really much of an excuse is it. If you cant present a balanced and factually correct story then maybe it isnt that newsworthy....
I never had problems getting a minister to talk or to find an independent expert, but it feels a lot like RNZ is really not trying
The PR/comms staff in this govt run a very tight ship. It's harder than ever to get access to Ministers.
If RNZ could get Ministers on more frequently they would obviously have them, that's a no brainer. Interviews with Ministers are political reporters bread and butter. That they aren't on more frequently is absolutely the govts preference.
If you’re genuinely interested in understanding bias you could start with some of your own untested assumptions.
Are you conscious of what you’re bringing to the conversation with phrases like “both sides” or “only a list MP”?
Are “balance”, “fairness”, and “fact” always aligned?
Is Google really our friend?
