IF I HAD YOUR MOTHER

Poem

After I left you

I told myself

That which every lover

No longer in love

Tells themselves

I fell not for him

But for who he had the potential to be

It was a lie

I never saw you

I saw only me

I saw what I could be

If I had your eternally maternal mother

Your sober father

Two labradors, and a pool

and of course,

a home steadier than the earth beneath it.

You hated those dogs.
