Woman of Science

Poem

In school, we learn about deoxyribonucleic acid

and the double helix structure,

How the two strands unwind when DNA replicates,

which seems like avoidant attachment to me.

Or the difference between mitosis and meiosis,

How mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell,

And if you divide the rise by the run

you can calculate the slope of a line.

But there are mornings in early May when none of it matters.

When the sun sears the coral horizon,

and the clouds are marching north.

A mockingbird is trying on the song of a stellar jay,

The breeze tickles the skin of the lake and

it quivers.

When the tip of your nose traces the nape of my neck.

I may be a woman of logic and science,

But there are mornings in early May when none of it matters.

Everything is magic,

Or nothing is.
