Why Silence the Singing Bird?
I know they won’t approve of you
I know they’ll tell me it’s wrong
I know they’ll force me back into Heaven
A place where I don’t belong
I know they’ll try to drown our fire
But that would take the entire sea
I know they’ll try to rip us apart
As though they’re saving me
But the truth is that both of us are ill
A madness that no one could tame
They’ll stomp on the ember and consume its ash
Not knowing from where it came
It came from us; deep within our bones
Skin hot to the touch
We relish the warmth while burning the village
We are simply too much
I would not object if they sent us away
To a world we were built to bear
Where the grass giggles and the trees don’t scream
I cannot breathe this air
We cannot tell them of our love
We cannot say a word
The slightest whisper could ravage our world
Trust not the singing bird
Perhaps someday things will be different
Maybe they’ll welcome the dove
Perhaps someday the world will accept us
Someday, we’ll be allowed to love
