Rooftop tent with bottom access from sunroof?

Is there a good rooftop tent model out there that is a hard shell (pop up), but allows access to the tent area from the bottom? Like you could hoist yourself up into the space from the car's interior (through the sunroof), similar to how you would do so with a camper van with a pop-up roof? I have a Subaru Forester with a big panoramic sunroof, so I think a setup like this would be a perfect way to take advantage of it.

I have an irrational fear of situations where I need to be able to crawl into the driver's seat and drive away in the middle of the night without exiting the vehicle, and this would help in that regard immensely without having to buy a full on van.

Who did you piss off?

LMAO! Like I said, it's an irrational fear

If you're worried about being alone then I'd suggest getting a medium sized dog as your travel companion.

My lab wakes me up if anything comes near the camp site at night.

Me, I dont "worry", I just prepare.

I dont think its irrational, I actually think it's smart to think about possible scenarios and solutions. As a woman especially, I have considered this same question for my RTT since it would allow me options in different scenarios.

The only ones I can think of are the platform tents, like the Go Fast Camper, although they are fairly expensive but do allow access from the bottom

I’ve seen one. Not sure if this is the one I’ve seen but this popped up on a quick google.

Not sure it’s super convenient but might work In an emergency. I doubt you could drive away without damaging the tent if you don’t go outside.

Thanks, I saw this too but there's limited info online about this model other than this website. Might have to dig further

Ursa Minor makes them for Jeeps and Elements if you ever consider switching vehicles.

I have not seen one, but if you buy one with a platform, you could with some work set a bottom entrance, it will be very car specific, and will need you to keep the sunroof of your car open, that will be a problem if you sleep in the rain , but hey why not?

Yeah it's looking like a custom setup is likely the only choice

Are there custom rtt builders out there?

If you have a roof top tent, it would cover most all sunroofs.

You should check out Redtail Overland, very expensive but it’s similar to what your looking for

Very expensive is an understatement, they are outrageous, and also so cringe.

I dont understand this new thing (well, maybe not new, I am not super up on the trends) of cringing and being against RTTs. Its a choice like any other purchase.

For me, it makes perfect sense. I will save money on motels in the long run. Often, my car is loaded with my valuable things, and I really dont love unloading it every time I stop at a motel. I also hate motel-smell.

It will allow me freedom and versatility- for skiing and surfing and driving across the country. I think this unnecessary judging makes no sense- can you explain?

I’m not against RTTs, I have one and use it often. The Redtail overland product they are referring to are $20-25k for a roof top “tent.”

It’s marketed to the #vanlife crowd of people driving $100k+ Sprinters that can barely go off road, and are full of people who pretend they like to go camping but don’t actually like to be in nature. Despite Redtail’s marketing claims I wound water no one has ever been attacked by an animal in a RTT. These people think they are living in ultra sustainability, even though it’s quite the opposite, and a $25k “tent” is a prime example of that.

I'm also interested in this idea. It would allow one to stand up in the vehicle. Also for vehicles with camp mode (like Priuses), you can run the HVAC and get a/c or heat from the vehicle.

Will be a no brainer once more vehicles go electric. Some of the new electric trucks w/ campers/tents will be pretty cool imo.

Don't know if you ever figured something out but I was talking directly with a supplier on Alibaba a while back and they said they had one like the one in the video. I think it's a cool idea. Only catch is the dimensions of the tent trap door and the moon roof will likely be different, and you need to figure out a way to put up netting will prevent bugs etc from getting into the car. If I remember right that was the only reason I didn't get one, just didn't want to have to figure out the custom netting, probably not that hard in retrospect.

I also want a pop up to attach over a sunroof to provide standing room and ventilation when minivan camping. My perfect scenario would be a center section that could unzip and I’d hold the perimeter down with magnet strips to keep bugs out. Anyone see anything like that?
