looking for some early game cabalist advice

i'm at realm depth 51, playing as cabalist

i like the playstyle, but i'm running into an issue

i've been cruising through the game on the back of specialization shenanigans, mostly combo-ed with various iterations of the "on the rocks" trait (from centaur ranger) for cleanup

my fastest creature/sweeper (boots with all slots +% speed) casts a bazillion spells, giving all opponents a bunch of debuffs and racking up the "spells cast" count. i also have the "Pallida" trait (from terra vulpes) to try to get the ball rolling before the battle starts, and the "Storm to Pass" trait to skip some enemy turns. if i accomplish either of those things i feel invincible.

however, i've found that if i get unlucky with palladia and my opponent has a higher speed than my speedcaster (or they have random 'before combat' effects), it's possible they pop off and i die immediately

what's your best strategy to mitigate this? fusing a buffbot spellcaster with maximum speed? it seems like enemy levels are rapitly accelerating past mine (i'm around level 60, the opponents are above level 100), so that shouldn't work. fusing with mimic? that might work as long as the opponent doesn't have pre-combat triggers

are there some tanky creature traits or spell gems i should slap on a support monster?

tl;dr: how to cabalist at realm level 50

The mimic trait of always starting at the top of the timeline might help you.

Bard troubador trait Hymn of Chaos will shuffle the timeline randomly and I think you can get it pretty early. Its great since its very unlikely all the enemies will go first and you have a 50% shot at going first too.

Like someone else mentioned, mimic trait.

If missing that, there's chaos salamander + terra vulpes to increase turn 0 casting chance.

Otherwise, damage mitigation:

The cabalist perk that reduces damage with each ethereal spell gem. A good combo is the djinn that deals indirect damage each time it provokes (5% of int times number of ethereal spells) plus the Luxuria Sin that copies 3 of each enemie's spell gems (you'll start with at least 18 etereal spell gems).

Ents, nephil shieldbearer, phase knight, valkyries, are all great ways to mitigate damage early and make you live long enough to get your strategy going.

Edit: later, you can make pretty awesome turn 0 provoke teams with a cabalist (Bearon, djinn arcanomancer + mimic + wispwatcher + mass taunt spell, perdition swords relic, etc).

I personally keep a Nix Informer (Supersonic) in my team to shut down turn 0-1 spells by the enemy.

Acedia Sin (Sloth) is also solid as it drops enemy offensive stats 30% at the start of battle. They will hit softer if they do get the hop on you.

Edit: found in The Barrens (46-48) and Sanctum Umbra (61-63) respectively.
