Untitled: about dogs and rumination

Poem

Lately I have been finding it particularly difficult to stay still

Dogs in my mind run themselves raw

Leave a circle of torn grass

Barking at all that shifts and moves

Their orbit; inclined to polarity

never eating, never drinking, never failing

They keep at their chase.

I think I know what it is that I want to be

Eyes set on distinction, and yet

I pour out my lungs;

air rewritten into a canine compulsion

and find myself

Unable to move.

I like how it seems like you're trying to convey this feeling of over thinking something to point that it creates inaction and rumination. I think you did a great job of getting that across. I like how you emphasized some of the things that an anxious watch dog might do. I like the line "barking at all that shifts and moves" It's almost like these dogs (which I assume are supposed to represent your anxiety/thoughts) are on the look out for danger and they're trying to alert you any possible threat that might come up. Overall, I really enjoyed this poem. Good job!

Is there anything you’d change?

It's funny you say that because initially I was wondering if you could play around with the type of animal that you chose to write about to add an extra layer of depth. Only because when I think of dogs I think of playfulness, loyalty, unconditional love etc.

At first, I was kind of wondering if you could write about a more anxious or scared animal, maybe something that freezes from fear like a deer or an opossum. However, if you're set on writing about a dog then it might be beneficial to dive deeper into the anxious characteristics of a dog. I know you already kind of did that but I think if you went into more detail about it then it might help to convey more emotion within the poem and just further drive your point home. Hope this helps!

Well I chose dogs because they seem sweet and unassuming, they’re loyal and playful and I suppose what I was going for is a juxtaposition between something that generally has positive connotations and a level of incessance that destroys that positivity. Just as dogs are simple and non threatening so too are thoughts, but when you ruminate those previously simple thoughts become dangerous and damaging. I’m not sure if that makes sense but that’s what I was going for 🥴

No, that totally makes sense!

I love this highly relatable poem. And I love the metaphor I see in my mind's eye of a hyperactive, out of control dog chasing its tail and barking uncontrollably at everything around it. I think we can all relate to periods of time when we are overwhelmed by our thoughts/angst/pain/disappointment/fear/betrayal that we engage in a destructive endless loop of negative thoughts that feed upon themselves and make us incapable of doing anything productive while at the same time leading us to want to explode in all directions, all at once, in a desperate search for relief. Well done!

This piece conveys the feeling of ruminating so well. I have had a dog like this in my head lately too. He just runs around and around.. tearing up the grass. The thought can be just like the dog too, it can bark and bark at all the reasonable thoughts trying to get it to stop, but it just keeps going because it doesn't understand. It wasn't taught that way. It is scared of what it doesn't know to be true. These thoughts are caught in the vicious cycle.. they've been there so long they are the only thing that COULD be true. This is how I interpret this poem and it really made me feel something. Thank you for sharing OP.

I’m so glad I managed to capture something you could relate to, I appreciate your kindness.

I never thought of this. Dogs are loved by everyone. They elicit oxytocin. We cherish them like children, but nobody wants to be called a dog or be compared to one. Bunnies bears are ok. Love bunny. Teddy bear. But not love puppy. Maybe the word bitch is lurking behind it.

my thoughts are that a) this is lovely and b) i would scrap the first line. i feel like you made that point very clear in the rest of the poem— let the reader have some room to understand your imagery/metaphor without flat out explaining what it means in the beginning.

I wanted to keep it for structure, because initially the speaker is unable to stay still and yet at the end they cannot move- is there a way you think I could achieve that more implicitly?
