Do I call a mold remediation company if I'm not sure it's mold?

I have a very musty smell in 2 closets and a single room in my home. I have no idea what could be causing the smell. It is not an issue with moisture or humidity, and we have even emptied the closets and the smell remains.

Should I call a mold remediation company, or is there a different type of company that can search for the source of bad smells?

Musty smells don't necessarily mean mold. How are you certain that it's not the humidity? I'm not sure what stores you have around but a lot of home stores sell at home mold test kits that give you results in ~48 hours and you can even send in the optional sample to a lab to get more detailed results, like the type of mold (if any).

It's year round, our house goes from very low humidity in the winter to high in the summer, and it's there regardless.

Do you just take an air sample for these? How does it work?

It's just a Petri dish looking thing. Pretty simple to do, let it sit undisturbed for the required time and thats pretty much it. Here's one for example.

You only need "mold remediation" if it's black mold. In high humidity mold IS going to live in cool places that are undisturbed. Try finding it and spray everything down w lemon oil.
