Let Me Teach You How to Fish!

OFFERING TO MENTOR

I used to stream on Twitch - game dev and web apps. Never got huge, but it was fun!

One of my favorite things while streaming was to get distracted by chat and field their questions. People would share portfolios with me and ask for advice, or share coding challenges with me and ask for help discovering solutions. People would show me their designs or UI/UX concepts and ask for feedback. Sometimes business advice. But, unfortunately, work has me busy and I can no longer commit the hours necessary to properly do that.

At the start of my career, I had a hard time getting started, because there wasn't much help on the internet back then. I don't want that to happen to you. I can offer a few hours a week, depending on my availability, and I want to devote that time to helping others who deserve it. Anyone can be an amazing developer with just a bit of help, I honestly believe that.

I've been a developer nearly 20 years. I got my start developing silly games in ActionSctipt (do you remember Flash!) and later building websites, games, and mobile apps. I now have multiple revenue-generating apps and properties in the wild. I'm proficient in common web languages: HTML, CSS, JS. Server-side languages: PHP, NodeJS. Server software: Apache, Nginx. Common server OSs including many flavors of Linux. Common CMSs like WordPress, Shopify.

Let me know what you have going on! I want to help. I would love to hop on Discord with someone, see what you're working on, and help you get past whatever roadblocks you may have. I'm EST timezone, and usually available late nights. Just hit me up!

Can someone like me with zero experience and lots of start-stop attempt to learning programming apply? I hope you like a challenge. I have a background in Finance.

I've always wanted to learn programming, but mentoring such as this one is hard to find.

How do I reach you?

Everyone is welcome!

If it helps to understand my background: Years and years ago, I tried learning ActionScript 3. I failed hard and thought I'd never learn a "real" programming language (ha!).

I got hired as an illustrator in a firm that developed Facebook games. They used Flash. My boss let me dig though his source code, and, once I had a decent handle on the syntax, he taught me AS3. And later: PHP.

So trust me when I say: Anyone can learn. Of course, it will require effort on your part.

DM me, and we can exchange Discord deets.

I'm also super familiar with data/analytics, serverless architecture, database solutions, highly scalable application architecture, and all of the common AWS offerings.

If you're not familiar: AWS has free tiers for all of their tech, and you can basically run a small website for free for an entire year.

Been seeing a lot of people on C#, C++, Python; so happy to see someone who's seeking assistance in a language I know: PHP. What's got you stumped, friend?

Hey. I’m an aspiring game developer robotics hobbyist and would like to start with a job either as a game dev or a general programmer or engineer/developer. However I have no schooling background, and have only written a few lines of code when I was 13 in html+ Java, and a few recently with the basics of the 3 C’s and python on codecademy (nothing fancy, just the most basic syntax). It would be awesome to get some help on what to do to secure my goal or any help at all really. Hope the lack of experience is okay. My discord is bigswag#6097 :) thanks! Edit: currently 21 (22 in July) if that matters Also made a game, and started a few more with the help of tutorials. Made a calculator that would show your weight on mars, basic stuff.

I've hit the rookie bump - I got HTML, CSS and JavaScript, some PHP and super basic Python and I'm sitting here with my head in my hands not knowing how to proceed. My dream is the full-stack and the career that comes with that level. I want to make something bigger than myself. I have ideas that I don't even know the half of how to make happen, even with the knowledge I've gained in the last few months since I stopped tiptoeing around this world at 31, 13 years after I wanted to enter it.
