What a Scam on trade ins

Trade-In

I signed up for googlefi, bought a new pixel 6 and selected to trade in my old pixel 3 for ~$80. The policy said I had 30 days to return it.

Today is day 17, I went to return the old phone and realized I didn't have a return shipping label in the packaging. I contacted GoogleFi and they said the RMA for the trade in didn't go through and that there was no option to trade it in now. I thought that was ridiculous... I have a return box, they just need to generate a shipping label. It's 2022, we can do this.

They said the only way was to return my new pixel 6 and start over, but since it was beyond 14 days from my original order, I'm outside the return window for the new phone, so I'm fully SOL. They offered zero recourse or other options.

Anyone else run into this? Suggestions? What a scam...

The trade in process was super quick and smooth with both my phone and my girlfriend's. That being said, we mailed them out the day after we got our trade in kits. Waiting to mail it back, or especially losing the kit, makes it way harder to do anything effectively.

Definitely not a scam.

Also, I'm not calling the whole trade in program a scam. I'm sure the majority of these transactions go very smoothly. I'm saying their response to the problem they created is very scammy

Even if I had tried to mail the old phone back the day the new one arrived, it wouldn't change the fact that they didn't send me a kit, and based on their policy, can't send a shipping label to you (which is insane).

My only recourse if I did this immediately would've been to return the brand new phone and redo the whole transaction at substantially added cost and hassle to everyone. That seems really dumb.

I mean sure. I didn't lose the kit, they never sent it. And based on their policy I still had 13 days to deal with it. I didn't cut it that close. More importantly this seems like something they could pretty easily solve and they're refusing to.

I know you wanted to trade it in, but I suggest selling it on Swappa.com and using the box they sent you to ship it in. You'll get more money that way.

Yeah thanks. I know there are other ways to sell it. The whole point of the trade in process is to remove this hassle and added step. I posted this to a) highlight that their policy and unwillingness to correct their mistake is pretty messed up and b) see if anyone else had run into this and had helpful suggestions to resolve with Google.

Not the answer you probably want to hear but i would suggest selling it on Swappa or something, Fi's trade in service doesn't guarantee you get the price you were quoted and you don't have the option of getting the phone back if they value it less than the quoted price.

My trade-in was flawless.

However, you're usually better off checking eBay for the going rate of your phone in the same condition. Individual buyers will usually pay double what Google will give ya.

Yup. They never sent the packaging to my partner for his trade-in when he bought his new phone so he followed up. Got the packaging, sent in the phone, and then instead of a credit we just got the phone mailed back to us with no explanation. It's puzzling for sure.
