This is definitely the best advice for the top repair. Add a rust converter as well to prevent future rust before slathering on the fibre fillcoat (there are a couple of good references in the other comments here). I did this for a temporary 3-month repair while waiting for a new roof and it is still holding 4 years later . . .

strange that one rib seems to be lapped the wrong way

It looks like left is upslope and the strange overlap is just the remains of a previous repair or flashing.

Nothing more permanent than a temporary solution!

Look for Coltogum Brushable sealing compound. It is a fiber reinforced paint and can even be used on wet surfaces.

Yep, this is exactly what the roofer had us put on our roof as well.

And lots and lots of chip brushes from the hardware store.

Rust converter, rust proof priming paint, aluminium backed bitumen tape and a healthy dose of sellys roof and gutter. It won’t be pretty but it’ll hold until tradies become more affordable (if ever) and/or you can afford a proper repair.

When ya wanna upvote for some good advice but the cheeky dig at tradies gets ya too...

No dig. Roofing specialists are worth their weight in gold if you can find a good one. But with plenty of full re-roofs on their books, it’s hard getting them to do quick repair jobs.

Oh that's fair enough haha. We have the constant issue of them just not finishing the job to 100%. They get the gutters and sheets on and then it's off into the wind for getting flashings installed and all finished up. Punish.

Just have a crack at replacing the one sheet yourself.

I live near the sea and my iron had rusted out under the ridge flashing and it was working its way down. There’s no way to stop the rust advancing when it’s that bad, especially by the sea. I also had nail holes rusting out.

I patched with bituminous tape (https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/sika-multiseal-self-adhesive-bituminous-sealing-tape-100mm-x-10m-grey/p/360226 or there’s 150mm wide stuff) and liberal application of silicon. Needed to get up every few months and top up, but it bought me a couple of years.

Rust converter sucks the big one in my experience with cars and farm equipment. Horrible stuff that only sorta kinda maybe works. If you're lucky. And good luck painting over it reliably.

Grab yourself a tin of "Penetrol" for $30 from Bunnings, and next time it's dry, get up there and paint it generously into/onto all the rusty bits. One tin will probably last you your whole life. It goes a long way.

It's magical stuff. It's a mixture of penetrating fluid magic and a flexible dry curing oil. The penetrant carries the oil into, over, and around any porous bits (aka rust) that you didn't/couldn't remove, and then evaporates, leaving behind the sealing oil brew which dries and hardens into a semi-flexible varnish kind of finish.

BUT.. it's not only varnished and sealed against moisture on the top surface, that oil/varnish is all the way through any existing porosity, so it's sealed from the inside as well. It'll wick up inside any joints or cracks nicely too.

No moisture or air on your steel means no more new rust.

Then you paint over it like it's not even there.

Or not. The farm gear I've painted with it hasn't been painted over, and has completely stopped rusting in the treated areas despite being outside all the time and parked in long wet grass.

I am so happy to have found this stuff after all these years of "rust converter" disappointment. I only wish someone had told me about it 25 years ago!

This is my garage roof. I have got a quote for a repair but to be honest the price is just too high for me right now. Wondering if a sealing tape would give me an extra couple of years? Or is the rust just too much and I need to bite the bullet now.

Single storey garage roof mate? It's really easy to swap out a roof sheet or two. Give it a crack yourself

Sheet underneath will be rusted too. Best repair is to cut top sheet back 100mm and install a change of pitch flashing. Lower sheets can have stopends made from foam if they are too rusty to trim off and turn up. There are still roofs being installed this way today as it is only considered "best practice" to use a change of pitch flashing.

That’s what I’d be doing. If you cut off the rusted ends of bottom sheet and then fold up the stop the bottom of flashing can be made to cover further. Should be better than new.

Agree with cleaning up rust with wire brush and then use bituminous tape. With the tape very carefully follow the contours of the ridges of the metal so that it adheres with no gaps. Then take another length and do the same again on the uphill side of your tape, and lap it over by half so that this protects the uphill edge of the tape (ie both lengths of tape have to fail to get water under it).

Silicone. A lot of it. Try tidy up the rust a bit. You could spray with a zinc paint.
