Good morning friends. I'm putting a 17" .358win barrel on this impulse and this barrel clamp pin was seized, I let it soak on penetration oil and used mild heat a few times for week before just bashing it out with a rubber mallet. The pin is gouged a bit but the steel extension seems remarkably hard and in good condition.

Savage will not sell me replacement parts; bolt head, clamp pin, or the barrel extension. My question is, what type of alloy is suitable for that barrel extension? I would like to have maybe 10 barrel extensions for the OEM pre fit shanks. I have a machine shop willing to do the job but they don't know what type of steel it is.

Any information, opinions, ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Machine shop doesn't have a Rockwell hardness tester? That would tell you how hard it it then pick something along the same lines.

that would only tell them how hard the piece is which would not tell them what steel or alloy it is. Many steels and alloys can be hardened to the same degree.

I don't think I actually read your comment before I replied. Leaving it up though.

I'd go with something that is a known quantity 8620, 4140, and 4150 should be fine once heat treated. For stainless, 416 would be fine.

Perfect! Thank you for the suggestions. I'll talk it over and hopefully I can get this project back on track!

Savage won’t tell you what the material it’s made from?

I was putting a custom rifle together for a customer. I had a part that I assumed was blued. I called the manufacturer who, like in this situation, WOULD NOT TELL ME WHAT IT WAS MADE OF. So I prep it to go into the bluing tank. I dunk it and let it sit for the appropriate amount of time. Pull it out and it’s still in the white. Fine. Maybe it’s a higher Nicole steel? So I adjust the heat and salt ratio. Nearly turned the gun into a Cheeto and the part never took any blue. Ended up cerakoting the whole thing instead.

Manufacturers don’t seem to like discussing alloy in my experience for whatever reason, even in an innocuous way.

Steel alloy is as far as they go.

Make it out of 4140 or 4340. Heat treat it to 50-55 hrc.
