Interviews and References
I've made it through 4 rounds of interviews for a new opportunity and they are now asking me to provide references and I am unsure what to do. They want 3 references, 1 of which being a supervisor within the last 3 years.
I have been with my current employer for the last 9 years and the last 7 I have been with my current supervisor. My current supervisor knows that I have been unhappy (things outside their control) and has always been supportive of me pursuing opportunities in theory. Our relationship is good, but I am apprehensive of asking them to be a reference. I do think they would be an EXCELLENT reference and would speak high praises.
My current job has been my only experience post college outside of a short internship over 10 years ago that has no relevance to this new opportunity. So its really either my current supervisor or nothing.
Any guidance or perspective from someone in similar situations?

I feel like it's extremely common to not want a potential future employer to contact your current employer. I started a new job in March and even once I accepted the job, I asked them not to contact my current company until I had given my notice. They were totally fine with that. I'd explain to the recruiter or hiring manager that you don't want them to call your current supervisor for a job you may not even be offered, and see what they say. If they can't understand why that would be a concern I'd see it as a bit of a red flag
