Looks like a pop-up.

There's a plastic bolt down the middle, extra wide standard screwdriver (butter knife works too).

Looks like you got some buildup of crap, hit it with wd40 or lubricant first.

How would I apply it? Like around the edge of the screw? Wait and then try?

Yeah, just shoot it around the edge, let it sit for a few minutes and hopefully it's nice & loose

ah the water is obscuring the giant flat head screw in the center. but I can't get it to turn with a regular large flat head screwdriver.... I'm at a loss honestly.

Why won't it turn with your flat head is the groove to shallow is the flat head your using to big or dull?

Feels shallow and the screw feels stuck. It feels like I need a wider flat hat than I have on hand if that makes sense.

I recently had this exact problem. I found a youtube video suggesting an impact driver. Luckily I have one. It worked instantly. With just a regular size flathead bit.

I discovered a bunch of gross hair down under there. I'm not replacing the stupid thing until I leave my rental. Now I just use a hair trap in the drain, and a rubber stopper for baths.

An impact driver is THE solution here. Had the same thing recently.
