Who thought a Q50 was a BMW- killer?

Just spent a week in an Infiniti Q50, a car some reviews said was better than the 3 series. While it was ok, it wasn't in the same class in terms of driving, comfort, technology, or anything else Anyone else driven a so-called competitor that massively underwhelmed?

I honestly dont know anyone besides infiniti/nissan fanbois that seriously thought it was a bmw killer.

28

This is it.

All I see all over instagram are infiniti fanbois talking about how their VR30 car is going to kill B58s blah blah blah. Everyone else knows it’s a load of horseshit. B58 + xDrive is a winning ticket 90% of the time, and when it’s not, S58 + xDrive is. I mean for god’s sake stock turbo X3Ms are running 10s in the 1/4.

Edit: I wanna clarify, speed isn’t everything. I appreciate much more than speed, but it’s what the majority of infiniti owners i’ve met solely care about. There’s a reason my E92 isn’t just FBO on stock everything. Bilstein coilovers, M3 arms front and rear, poly subframe and bushings, poly trans mounts and 1M throttle conversion. Interior is bone stock other than a ZHP shift knob because it’s already so damn comfortable yet supporting. The inflatable bolsters and lumbar support are amazing for an ‘09 model.

13

They cant even keep up with my FBO N54 a 15yr old car with bolt ons.

8

It’s laughable. I won’t say I don’t think the cars look nice, because I do. I think they look pretty good, but that’s about it. If the RedSport is supposed to be competing with the M3 it’s a joke. G80s are runnings 9s on stock turbos for god’s sake.

Then comes the lighter M2 soon. 😂

Lmao. Many of my gfs and some male friends have Q50. The leather smells good but NOTHING else is comparable.

Owned a ‘19 q50 Red Sport for 2 years. Though I’ve never driven a bmw, I will tell you that IMO the q50 slushbox was really slow to shift. Reason I traded it.

This one wasn't Red, but in sport mode, the transmission sounded like it was going to self-destruct as it tried to hold on before shifting.

Travez187•

Yeah, I figured the 400hp would keep me excited but the transmission just ruined the experience of the q50RS.

Honestly, not even in comfort?

3
Psi440OP•

Yup. Seats were narrow and uncomfortable (to me) and even in comfort mode, the car was jittery over all but the smoothest roads. Might have been the tires on the Infiniti, but my F32 rides better even in sport mode on summer tires. Ymmv.

Wow, thanks for the feedback.

Good car but not a bmw killer. Infiniti really lacked their infotainment center interior.

The two screens, one touch and one not, were really hard to use. iDrive is much better.

I think in magazine spec races they every so often look good by the numbers, but they just dont drive as well. Build quality on nissan/infinity is pretty meh. Even the "heavy duty" SUV flavors rust out so easily and just generally fall apart.

One of my workers got a used Q50 (with damaged front and rear bumpers) and parks it next to my 435. . . It gave me a chuckle the first few days.

No way, even my old E46 felt better to drive than the Q50

Nah, when I was car searching 4 years ago, I narrowed my choices down to the Lexus IS250 F sports, the Q50 2.0's, and the f30 320i's(which is obviously what I went with). The 320i had the least amount of power out of the 3, not by much though, but it was waaaaayyy better at everything else than the other 2 and it wasn't even close. The suspension, braking, handling, seating position(underrated car topic btw), and overall driver experience about the bmw absolutely destroyed the other 2 options.

I used to own a Q50 Redsport and had it tuned with a JB4 and intake. It was decent in terms of amenities, but overall comfort, power delivery, and styling is just lackluster when compared to my M340i. While they are in “similar” classes (sporty, luxury sedans) the are very different. BMW wins in every category.

As an American I think BMW’s only competition is in Europe still. Audi, Mercedes Benz, and Alpha Romeo. Infiniti is just Nissan, which is right up there with Tesla as having the worst build quality in the industry right now.

Have you seen the Challenger? Just a few years ago, that and the 300 had the absolute most dogshit build quality (most of FCA, but those especially). I drove with a quality engineer from FCA and the amount of stuff he pointed out blew my mind. He said if it weren't for their main customer base being old people and die hard muscle car fans that overlook the issues, they'd probably never sell. Wonder if it's changed since their merge..

2

Well.. definitely not going from my 328i to a Q50 anymore 😭😭 I dreamt about this car many times.. an Audi it is for me next 😉

I, too, make my personal car buying choices based off 1 person on reddit.

Not solely based off of this one person on Reddit. But thanks for the cackle 🤣

I didn’t think it was supposed to be q50 to 3 series.

I thought it was red sport to m3.

I’m on BMW #7 and I did have a q60 for a minute and there’s a lot I loved about my Q. But from loaner car experience I know a standard q50 isn’t the same beast as a red sport. It isn’t even a beast at all.

KYBourbon89•

At the time the Q50 came out, I think it was the closest thing to a 3. The G37 was but I thought they stopped making the G37 and Q50 replaced it… and then 4 series sedan came around the same time. So it’s comparable to 3 and 4 but definitely not the 5 series.

1
Psi440OP•

The G35/37 was supposed to take on the E90. I test drove it before I got my 335 and like the Q, it was ok but not in the same zip code.

1
Frosty-Mall4727•

Well yeah…. I mean, I didn’t mention the 5 series.

I was just under the impression that the BMW killing Infiniti was a red sport vs m3.

KYBourbon89•

Oh idk I was just rambling. At the time I was fully aware but it’s been some years lol

1

I don’t know what you mean by technology but the infotainment systems in all BMW’s suck.

0
Psi440OP•

Gotta disagree. iDrive is actually one of the better systems. Early versions were bad but they worked out the problems and other manufacturers are copying iDrive features now.

2

Like which ones ?? Unless they’ve fixed it in the last 6 months, it’s absolutely terrible.

As someone that just moved from Audi, I can’t understand this oddball system at all. Doing simple things is so unnecessarily complicated, and the Bluetooth simply sucks.

Mo_s11•

That’s quite a wierd one. The general consensus is always Audi infotainment isn’t the best. It’s laggy, not very intuitive etc whereas bmw is always praised for the IDrive. Audis virtual cockpit/digital display however is heads and shoulders above bmw.
