Unrequited Confessions

Poem

It's been five days and counting
Since our last 'talk soons'
I haven't heard from you since
I wonder if you're still okay
Or if you're saying goodbye
I wouldn't mind if you said it now

Then on the seventh, you said hi
How are you? I'm sorry, I'm late
I just had a lot of things to deal with
But I'm back, wholly yours
You have my time, yours alone
Let me wipe away your doubts

You know, I don't mind the waiting
In those times you've been my muse
And for nights and days, I've made
Poems with your lovely name
I would've read them to you
If you'll finally stay for good

So, honey, it's nearing midnight
And I'm stuck with the idea
Of being with you, and oh
I wonder if you thought it too
It seems you had left your heart
At the place you ran away from

Yet it's been three months, and counting
Since all our 'hellos' began
I haven't told you I liked you yet
I wonder if you've got a clue
Or maybe I'll just keep it to myself
I wouldn't mind if you don't feel the same

But you know, I don't mind the waiting at all
You know how I have fun in all our conversations
When you taught me how to fancy your music
You got me thinking of the books you've read
Made me imagine the places you've been to
You got me sharing my sorrows, sighs, and hopes
Oh now, you know, how I've come to like you so

a/n: To add a personal touch: This was inspired by the song Nothing by Bruno Major and... I am always tempted about whether or not I should send this to him. It already feels like it would be unrequited either way and yet, I feel rather light-hearted having posted this.

The poem is taken from my personal collection: 'My Echoes (Poems & Thoughts)'

Almost instantly my mind went to the song by Harry Chapin, “cats in the cradle.“ And as if on cue I began reading it to the beat of that song. When I got to your second stanza I didn’t know if I was in your poem or in my head singing the song.

The only stanza that stood out as being out of line with the rest of the poem is the last stanza. The lines get longer and the change in rhythm threw me off. I don’t know if others will have the same reaction but I thought I’d share my experience in reading your work.

Ah yes, the last stanza was deliberately done. I had meant this to be a song actually. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Much appreciated.
