Trust the plant. It knows what it's doing. It's just ditching the unused part of the old flower stalk. It'll keep the part that has flowers.

My most recent flower stalk did this about 1.5 months ago and the yellow stopped at the secondary spike. I’ve left it just the way it is and everything is looking good still.

Oof hopefully i get the same results. It took a year and a half to get flowers to grow back, i just want to enjoy them haha

It’s dead It’s dying all the way down to the living part The live part will be fine I let it dry a bit then snip where you wish Once it’s dry and woody it’s easier to see you won’t harm the living part at all

Go ahead and cut off the yellow stem. The part that knows it's supporting the blooms might stay okay. But if you don't want to risk it dying, I've had the blooms last quite awhile in a jar of water. (I cut mine because it had bloomed so much and I really wanted it to grow leaves this summer.)
