Steam Deck

Question

Has anyone tried to play WoWs on the Steam Deck and if so how well does it work? At the present time WoWs does not show up as a supported game.

The Wargaming Game Center version works mostly fine under Steam OS for me, I made a video about it a couple months back.

Some notes on playing portably since making that video:

  • You seem to have to use "Kron4ek Wine-Builds Vanilla" versions of Wine found in ProtonUp-QT to get it to consistently start without freezing.
  • I mention and show some issues with the mouse cursor disappearing, those don't happen with newer versions of Wine.
  • The main issue I do still have - sort of - is that after about 30 - 40 minutes of play in game mode, there's this weird performance issue where the framerate absolutely tanks every time you turn the camera. It's still playable, but sort of annoying, since you have to restart the game to get rid of it. The first two games after a (re)start generally play fine though.Since the video

I've also played the game on my steam deck in desktop mode connected to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard. My laptop broke, so I used the steam deck as a substitute desktop PC for a couple of days until that got fixed. Additional notes on that:

  • These performance issues after 30-40 minutes did not occur when playing the game in desktop mode!
  • I was able to play the game at 1080p with a mix of low, medium and high settings that looked pretty ok
  • I had my steam deck connected to a 144 Hz monitor only 120Hz was supported via HDMI though), and noticed that while leaving the framerate completely uncapped would give me framerates in the region of 40 - 70 fps with the configuration mentioned in the previous point, it did not feel smooth. Setting the in-game framerate limit to 44 FPS (to allow 1-2 FPS framerate drops to still produce a new frame at least every three monitor refreshes) felt a lot smoother and more consistent, and the game was actually quite alright to play even at 1080p that way. The lower framerate cap probably made it smoother, because it allowed more power to be allocated to the CPU rather than the GPU portion of the APU, helping it deal with spikes in load (previously visible as frame-time spikes)

I've been playing the Steam version pretty successfully. The custom controls are easy to set up, and work well. Pretty pleased :)

Did you have to install any additional software?

No, just plain simple Steam version. Not even Proton-GE. Note that it won't work that way with a non-Steam WoWs account. But I suppose the regular version works well under Bottles (that's how I play World of Tanks without issues on Linux)

Thanks so much. I am running Steam version of WoWs, so it sounds like easy peasy. I just got my notice that I can buy Steam Deck now, been on a wait list it seems like for a year.

So far the only successful plays I've seen are by installing another OS on the device.
