They told me

Poem

They told me that

I left my religion for love

they told me that

my destiny is hell

I told them my religion is love

my mosque is in the eyes of my beloved

the mihrab* of my prayer is the arch of his brow

قالوا لي إنني

تركت ديني للحب

قالوا لي أني

قدري هو الجحيم

أخبرتهم أن ديني هو الحب

مسجدي في عيون حبيبي

محراب صلاتي هو قوس جبينه

*A niche in the mosque's wall for prayer

Translated from Arabic, both my work

Oh. Wow…..this is incredible. I’ve grown up as a conservative fundamentalist christian, and trying to find myself, my happiness, had been a very difficult journey. The ones that raised me, cared for me, protected me….now don’t speak to me. Because I’ve become different from them. But I have to be me. I am So Glad you found love! Bless you, and all the best to you and yours. Thank you for sharing

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

The imagery in this poem is subtle but astounding. I really like how you express so much in so few lines. The "play" on words with the lines about religion and love is really creative and add a new level of profundity to the piece. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem!

This speaks volumes in a concise and naturally poetic way about how we are indoctrinated by religions, culture, politics and a myriad of other labels and semantics designed to confuse, control and focus our attention away from what is actually important to, and empowers us.
Great work and thank you for sharing.

I lack the religious background to ever really understand the subject here, but I love this as much as any of your other work; every sentence in it seems a statement in itself. I'm really glad that you've gone on posting. Good work.

I come from a Muslim background and I'm a gay man, a lot of conservative Muslim consider homosexuality a sin so... I tried to blend religious imagery of the mosque's architecture with my hypothetical love's physical features, in a way that can be described as romantic or blasphemous depending on your disposition

The Arabic version is a little more lyrical, sadly poetry doesn't do well in translation

There's this line in the movie Paterson that says 'poetry in translation is like taking a shower with a raincoat on'. I don't know if that matches your experience at all, but I think it's funny and I'd highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already.

That aside, I empathise! From one member of the queer community to another, I hope you receive the love and respect you deserve.
