The Crutch of Words
Words, words, words
Words tidy up the room
And where silence lies agape
They fill the space there too
Letters, sounds, and sentences
They help us all escape
And cover up the spot
Where shriveled petals flew
When a flower dies
You erase the gray of its fading crown
And supplant it with a healthy gem
That way, in the end, you let life burgeon forth
Without the sight of broken stems
Words are liminal spears
The hum that shields our hearts
A lullaby on loop with each “beat,” the constant restart
NO, DON’T GO, DON’T LEAVE US ALL ALONE
The tears of relatives and sorry din of friends
Tear no white from the cloth of loss
And light no spark in midnight winds
For once, I ask that words be left behind
That we bathe, alone, in shrieks of silent pain
Pangs that never meet the eyes of day
Don’t mock that wound with noise, nor feed its taste for worse
Don’t use loud grief to soften hurt
Let silence be, and for the loss be worth
