Saw someone else post their Herman Miller chair with some headphone draped near it, so thought I would post this. I think these phones in particular are fairly unpopular if not polemical here, but I couldn’t be happier about em. They all do something different or fun or better than one of the others. No I’m not a bazillionaire… saved money and deal hunted used cans. Anyway yeah. Fun office chairs and headphones, yay!

I absolutely love my 4z :) I also love my Embody. What are you driving those with?

The Dianas with a Headamp GSX mini. The 4z usually with a Sony TAZ but also portables. The 909 usually stays bedside with an MDAC +, but sometimes at the desk too with the TAZ

There’s a screaming deal for a champagne colored gsx mini on headfi right now. If I didn’t have one, I’d go for it

Is that the 4Z? I’m close with the LCD-5 and TH909, I do love them both. No Herman Miller or Abyss though.

Yup! The 4z. It’s stupid east to drive. Pretty much sounds its best out of anything.

MX4 was also super easy to drive. I could use it out of a PS4 controller no problem.

Is the MX4 a big upgrade from the LCD X?

I haven’t heard LCD-X, so can’t comment on how they compare. I really liked MX4, though.

Never had a chance to hear any of them, and between my LCD-5, HE6se, and Ether CX I have my planar needs handled (plus some others that have fallen into disuse like my LCD-3, HE4XX, M1570, EL-8 Titanium, Sash Tres, and Aeon Open X).
The LCD-5 handles ultimate detail, speed, and transparency. The HE6se is great for when I want brutal levels of slam, and the Ether CX is great for when I want something closed.

By the way, you run stock pads on your 909s or any aftermarkets?

Stock pads, they seem good to me. I’d had a TH-X00 Ebony previously which had awful feeling pads so I switched to a pair of Dekoni Elite Lambskin which didn’t seem to change the sound but improved comfort. The TH-909 seems to use much better stock pads.

Yeah I got the dekoni elites as well and while nice, don’t find them to be much of an upgrade in terms of comfort or sound. I got some ZMF pads for it which are far and away nicer to the touch and more comfortable, the diameter is just a bit bigger so they mount kinda fucky.

My issue with the TH-X00 pads wasn’t so much the size as the material - it was just awful papery-feeling pleather. The material on the TH909 pads feels good to me, and the openings are a bit larger as well.

The Fostex 909 is such a cool looking headphone and the video of of how they do the paintjob makes it extra impressive.

I've had mine for over 12 years, and I bought it from an office space that was being liquidated. Only thing I've had to replace was the back support pad which cost around $30

How do you like your chair? Do you use your chair for sitting back / music listing and work? I was already looking for an office chair upgrade and after all those Hermann Miller posts the Aeron peaked my interest

They are amazing and they hold up tremendously well. Mine is about 15 years old and no signs of wear. They def cost a bit more(unless you can find one used), but it is something you will have for a long time. It’s also quite adjustable so there is something for everyone.

I have a papasan I also use for music, it’s better. But the aeron does work and music great!

Honestly, I love my Aeron. It took a bit of getting used to at first especially with the plastic frame but the comfort is seriously next level! I bought mine off of Craigslist for around $200.00!

Got one on OfferUp for $350 too. I'd pay full price for one if I had the money lol, this thing will easily last me another decade and I can sit in it all day

OP - do your LCD-4z come close to the 909’s for bass depth and extension? I’d find that a fascinating comparison. I know you’re talking about Planar vs DD (and all the bass-related advantages DD cans naturally give you) but for my money the LCD-4’s might be the bassiest Planars out there. Fascinating contest. Is it even close?
EDIT: Does anyone have significant experience A/B’ing the LCD-4 vs LCD-4z? I get that the 4z are easier to driver and have a much lighter chassis, and that as a result there’s some natural trade off when it comes to detail retrieval (with the LCD-4’s) still being slightly superior there, but what about the bass profile of both?

The 4z trounces all for bass (all I have or have ever had). It holds together better and deeper than any phones I’ve ever had. The 909 has much better sound stage and less of a dark tilt, but songs that go way wubba wubba low, 4z no doubt. The 909 isn’t a bass monster (it delivers no doubt, but it’s not a 900 for as closely related as they are)
I’ve never A/B’d 4 vs 4z, but sonic memory paints them the same to me.

Impressions of the LCD 4Z vs Abyss Diana V2?

Diana less dark, better soundstage and mids. 4z best bass slam ever smoother treble. Comfort about even with the pilot pad on the v2, she gives me a hotspot without. Weight of 4z doesn’t bug me, but lighter is better. Diana scales better with a higher end amp (gsx-mini) 4z pretty much always sounds the same. 👍

Welcome to the club. The Aeron is my fav. So modular and easy to repair/upgrade. I have fallen asleep so many times in that chair.

I work from home and no longer need a bed lol.
These things are tanks though. I was moving and the strap broke and the chair went flying in the moving truck and ended up leaving a sizable dent on the truck. Only scuffed the chair and that wiped out with magic eraser. lol.
