[PiF] Various indie games in alphabetical order. This week: games beginning with F, G and H.
The idea is, I'll list some interesting indie games and board games beginning with this week's letters. If a couple or more people both want a specific game, I'll pif at least one copy of it.
- You can suggest more games for me play forward, as long as you tell me why they're interesting.
- You can ask for up to three games, but not "all" or "whatever is left". Doing that tells me that you aren't interested in any of them - you just want free crap.
- I may pif all of the games forward, or one maybe one game several times. It depends what people want.
Fate of the World It's a management simulator. It's also a look at the various crises that could affect people in the next couple hundred years. It's depressing, hard, and a bit controvesial too.
Frozen Synapse A turn-based tactical shooter. The interesting part is that both players give orders to their troops, and then once they are done, all orders for the turn are carried out simultaneously. Mechanically, it reminds me of the 1994 board game, Robo-Rally which is a personal favorite of mine.
Garry's Mod Physics sandbox in Valve's Source engine. You can do and make whatever your want. Honestly, you should just google Garry's Mod as see the wonderful and weird things people have done. Spaceships, race courses, giant rube goldberg machines, medieval siege weaponry, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Interesting footnote: the creator got into a bidding war with Notch on one of the humble bundles for top donation.
Gratuitous Space Battles, or Gratuitous Tank Battles You customize your spaceships/tanks, deploy them in varying amounts on the battlefield in the places you want, and start the battle. The AI takes control of both sides, and you get to watch the pretty explosions. It's interesting. They've taken the exciting part of strategy games, and made a game solely based around that. At the same time, by removing the player from the actual battle, we have a game where skill isn't remotely tied to micromanagement or "clicks per minutes", and no player can use movement related exploits to gain an advantage.
Hydrophobia: Prophecy A 3rd-person cover based shooter where emphasis is placed on water-filled environments. That statement doesn't make it sound appealing, I know. The interesting thing about this game is in how they've made movement in the water flow so gracefully compared to other games. The other interesting part is the physics engine for the water, and how water flows from one area to another when you do something like open a door in a water-filled room into a (previously) dry one. It's not the most realistic of engines, but it was unique.
Grotesque Tactics: Evil heroes as recommended in this comment below by DizzyEevee.
Hard Reset as recommended here by sergregor and here by scurvebeard.
Games that other people have told me are interesting, but I'm looking for a specific recommendation a couple sentences on why the game is unique/interesting) in the comments below as to whether or not I should play them forward: Gemini Rue, Gobblet, Flotilla, Fray, Hard Reset. Sorry for the short list today, I'll add some more in 9 hours or so.
Not giving away: Gundemonium trilogy was in a cheap indie bundle recently, as was Garshasp: Monster hunter. The hacker evolution games are (were?) on sale on Desura for 75% off.
