Gone

Poem

There’s a distinct sadness

To eating the leftovers of the last meal

You cooked together

Of pulling back the sheets

On the bed you share

Knowing they’re not there with you

They’ll come back

But its the time they’re gone

Where there is a distinct sadness

In reading your poem I was reminded to be more aware and grateful of the time we spend with those we love. You never know when it will be the last time. Thank you.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. Great poem, sad poem. This resonates a lot with me. An expired relationship is the greatest catalyst for the poetic nature in people in my opinion, that they may not have otherwise known existed.

The specific nature of the content gives me the impression that these memories are so fresh and strong in your mind, so important to you that the rest of the world just has to bear witness to them, they just have to be aware that such hopeless sorrow exists somewhere.

Hope your pain eases soon.

My fiancée is a traveling CNA and while the money is good, I miss her in a way that I can only put into poetry. There will be more. I have a series of love poems I wrote for her you can look out for.

I don’t really have any insightful feedback, but I just wanted to say that I really adore this poem and felt the longing in it, and it is so sweet that you write love poems for your fiancé ❤️

First off, the poem starts off so strong. The line "there is a distinct sadness" works so well, because it describes such a specific moment, that you might not even be aware of if you haven't experienced it. Very observational.

But that's also the reason why I feel like that line doesn't work in the end. There, you're talking about "the time in between", which is very general (pretty much the rest of your life), so the sadness isn't as "distinct" anymore. I might be wrong, but I personally just felt disappointed when I read the punchline.

P.S. I appreciate how you used "they" to describe the lost significant other. Very reader-centric (aka printable) writing.

Edit: For some reason I thought this was about the death of a partner. I'm happy to hear it's just a long-distance thing.

Because it's that time they're gone, that you're never really sure they'll be back. It stops becoming a matter of when, but if. I liked it, and maybe it's because Im currently coming to terms with someone who I thought was my forever, never coming back, but I felt this. Thank you.

I’m glad it resonates with you but I’m sorry it does at the same time. I hope you find closure.

This poem is short and poignant, it’s message clear. It rings very true for anyone who is currently missing a loved one for one reason or another, and teaches you to cherish the give you do have with your loved one. The only thing I’d wish for is for this poem to be longer, because I honestly think it would’ve worked better with a few more verses.

And what if they don't come back? What to do then? Loved it made me feel

You didn’t waste a single word. Love the callback to the opening line at the end. The first two lines are incredibly clear emotional images. It’s nice to see something so romantic and so concise. Thank you for your work.
