Life before there was fast food restaurants on every corner 1970s

The ironic part is that I still do this on long road trips. We pack a back of snacks for the road. Now, we generally don't just stop on the side of the road like this (although, I remember doing this as a kid). I usually hit a rest stop or truck stop along the way. We don't buy food, though. Maybe some drinks (coffee is essential). We just pull up, gas up, then park and eat what we brought.
And the coffee can was used for…?
Oh, I remember the coffee can!
Eh. I was a city kid, and within 2 blocks there was a Burger King, 4 diners, a Chinese place, a Baskin-Robbins, Haagen Dazs (in case I wanted carob yum), a poboy place, and in the summer, a snoball shop run out of the back of someone's house.
And of course, a grocery and convenient stores.
I lived in the city, too... but my family went on a ton of road trips.
One thing about road trip vacations when I was a kid was we got to have the McDonald's breakfast, but lunch usually sandwiches mom made before we hit the road. We kept a cooler with drinks and snacks in the station wagon.
That's actually how it goes down in my family, too. Especially if we're leaving really early. We stop by Sonic. As kids, we'd try to get our parents to pick up McDonalds or Jack-in-the-Box (a Southern California thing).
We have Jack in the Box here in Texas too, but didn’t get it often when I was a kid.
My mom was into organic, before it was cool. I recall wheat germ and carob chips. She had a garden. Most everything was scratch made. Vacations were anything goes. We'd get McDonald's for breakfast but we also had a cooler full of pops and sandwiches and we're allowed to eat junk food in the back seat. I remember big brown grocery sacks full of chips and cookies and Easy Cheese.
That takes me (way) back. Mom loved packing “car hood lunches”. We would stop at restaurants too but a lot of our road meals were just like this - minus the fancy table and chairs.
Yah. We don't waste space for that. Unless we're on our way to camp somewhere. Usually, we stopped at a rest area.
This sub is veering towards Boomer-level gatekeeping.
Would you prefer a Millennial/Gen Z pity party?
I'd prefer a happy medium
There were fast food restaurants on every corner when we traveled, we just brought sandwiches due to frugality. To this day I will not bring fruit on a road trip. Sandwiches yes, but fuck fruit, or carrots in any form.
We just started packing more of our own food on trips when COVID started and we didn't know where or how we might eat.
It's been great. We did it again this year on two trips and once you make a stop at a fast food joint and drop $45 on lunch it feels even better.
Ive even go so far as to pack lunch and one dinner when my son and I go on weekend trips for his sports. It's save a little money and then we splurge on a nice local meal when we are out.

We used to get breakfast at Stuckey's. Loved the biscuits.
