Then when a teacher snaps, who will get the gun to defend the kids from the distraught teachers?
Kinderguardians.
This deserves an award, nice.
We should arm the children to defend themselves from teachers.
Yeah I am very smart. :) /s
Some republicans have definitely already considered this
Treat it like an Air Marshal. Train and arm one kid in each class in secret.
Wait, I thought teachers were modern day superheroes? Like Uber Jesus but without the guilt. Are you trying to say teachers are fallible?! Bigot!

'Alright, class, today we're going to learn about the Vietnam war, where the US sent a load of young men to die at the hands of farmers because government officials were petrified of an economic structure. We didn't ever get to Hanoi and it cost us 58,000 lives, but my god was it worth it!' (rests his prosthetic leg on the desk).
When you put it like that it sounds pretty stupid, like killing jfk because you were scared he’d turn commie
Hey man, it is useful stuff. US can just get skilled worker from other countries.
The same army where less than 7% of enlisted have a college degree? Those military people?
People don't get sarcasm i think. But you really think they care about the fact that someone doesn't have proper education? That is kind of the primary requirements to be liked by them
Lol why not hire Taliban fighters same same
When a random person snaps who protects them now?
You’re almost there.
Putting more guns in schools is the dumbest possible reaction to gun violence.
No sir!!! IT’S THE MURICAN WAY!!! Go back to your country /s
Only if you're interested in preventing it.
^(Edit: Daaaamn, people here are really protective of people who encourage school shootings. This is gonna be one of my proudest downvoted posts. Fuck every single one of you who thinks guns in schools are a good idea. You KNOW you're making it more dangerous. As diseased and stupid as you are, you can't fool us into thinking anyone is THAT stupid.)
Not if you like school bombings to be a thing.
Guns wouldn’t prevent a bomb from exploding…..guns are 100% reactionary. Someone is already there shooting and killing. It might limit the death toll, maybe but that’s it.
Yeah, poorly worded my point was escalating thing would bring bigger weapons.
I know they're playing checkers not chess, but part of me can't help but suspect it's part of some long term GOP plot to finally get rid of education all together.
Keep teachers impoverished. Keep giving them more kids to teach with fewer resources. Complain about everything they do anyway. Give them guns. See what happens.
Alas, that's a rational analysis. To the GOP, the US Constitution's "We, The People" do not exist -- USA consists of only owners and the owned. 'Public', as in "public schools"?? Pshaw. Privatize everything! You want education, or justice, or nontoxic air? Pay for it, peasant! ;(
Please, sir, may I have some more?
Sure, you can. But first, show me the money.

It’s just to blame teachers for Ms shootings. You give teachers guns and then point the blame of every dead child on them.
I imagine it was a typo, but I can't help but imagine Ms Shootings is the new class teacher ...
Same! Ms shootings, I need to go to the washroom. She opens her mouth and the sound of a hammer cocking escapes.
Lol?
The teachers without weapons to protect themselves are going to die. Plain and simple.
The teachers with weapons are going to die too, because the root cause of the problem isn't being addressed, but at least now the kids will worry about being caught in the crossfire like a proper war zone instead of having a single gunmen mowing them down.
I just don't see how this could go horrifically wrong.
Yes, because adding untrained teachers with firearms to active shooter situations is the only logical move here. I can't believe this is even being considered.
The law requires mandatory training and it's completely voluntary.
"...any staff member to carry after 24 hours of training, just a few of which involve hands-on weapons exercises."
Sounds super comprehensive.. don't try to fucking pretend this is some special trianing..
Yes standard ccw training. That's 24 hours total. It's not hard to learn how to shoot.
Cue video of officer with far more training shooting his foot while demonstrating gun safety to a class of kids:
Oh wait not that one:
Oops not that one either:
Wait, I think I got it:
No that's not it, so many of these:
There it is!
I can't believe I need to explicitly type this out but....Learning how to shoot a gun and learning how to handle an active shooter situation are different things.
You're correct. It's not hard to learn how to shoot. It is, however, very difficult to react calmly during a live fire situation. Police and military, whose actual jobs involve lots of training for such situations, often lose their ability to function calmly and rationally under such real life stress. 24 hrs doesn't cut it.
So just put of curiosity, will this 24+ hours of training be instead of classroom management training, safeguarding training, special educational needs training, behaviour management training, lesson planning, book marking or interaction with parents? Or is it a balanced loss from each of those areas?
Or is this what finally gets schools new staff members to account for that time lost from other school activities?
Given how God awful cops are at it that's shocking. 24 hours....fucks sake.
It's not hard to learn how to shoot.
- at a motionless, non-living target on a range ...
You think an arsehole wanting to shoot up a school will pose like a scarecrow waiting to be shot? You think there will be no children in the way or behind the arsehole?
Arming teachers is the worst fucking idea I have ever heard in my life and way too many people are way too okay with it.
I can't wait for the first student getting shot by a teacher because they were acting up or some shit.
Or a student taking a gun from a teacher..
This is the only honest argument to teachers with guns. This is an actual argument. The only realistic answer is proper safety. Safes in every classroom mounted in a open public space. Only the teach of that classroom has the code. each day the gun should be removed and taken from the building, or stored in a much larger and heavier safe in the office.
That’s by design.
Clowning, tardiness, note-passing -- capitol offenses. Sure, school is a life-or-death game. ;(
Putting this on r/nottheonion is peak USA. Teachers shouldn't be armed. That's ridiculous. When will that country finally see that guns are not the solution to gun violence? Apart from that this is not the way to go, letting children grow up in an environment with guns enhances violence culture.
It makes sense though. The answer to alcoholism is to drink more, to being morbidly obese is more cheeseburgers, to skin cancer is direct sunlight, so not find will help.
\s fucking obviously
Toxic Americanism
I'll take toxic freedom over peaceful servitude any day.
Ah yes, the mantra that Americans are encouraged to repeat until they believe it "land of the free"
Yea dead kids are definitely nbd to people like you.
It's the "most" in the headline that makes it oniony
The list of new laws reads like the Taliban helped write them..
"No mentioning of sexuality because it's grooming children you gross fucking paedophiles"
"Also we get to inspect the genitals of any kid we think isn't the gender they say they are lol"
It's absolutely insane that this is taking place.
I wouldn't be surprised if teachers are required to buy their own guns. They already buy a lot of the classroom supplies from their pathetic ~$33K salaries.
The end goal is that someone gets hurt, school gets sued. Schools go under, repubs push for privatized schools.
Most central Ohio districts have more sense.
in unrelated news central ohio parents feel much better about sending their children to school
arming teachers - yup that'll end well
I swear the point of this is to traumatize children and why? How does this make them safe? No data supports this stupidity.
Is this the right time to ask that question, "What could possibly go wrong?"
That's the most I've ever been worried about the use of the term "most".
are they gonna teach them how to navigate hostage situations and coach them on shooting cihldren? the gun is the easy part......
The concerning part is that some will...
Facts. When I was in school, kids found out how to access almost everything. What do they do when kids get access to the weapon.
Not only that, I had my fair share of teachers with anger issues and a couple teachers with drug/alcohol problems. Teachers aren't security guards, they are full of flaws. Of course, some teachers might be trustworthy as could be but many others would not be.
Guarantee at least one teacher is going to commit suicide in front of their class.
One of my middle-school classes so harassed our teacher that, had he been armed, I am sure there would have been casualties. As it was, he quit mid-semester. I saw him later in a nearby prison town's high school. Now he dressed all in black and exuded a deadly calm. No student dared fock with this ominous guy. I guess that was an improvement?
One of my teachers did that...or tried too... Before school in the classroom
Think about that. If a teacher is going to commit suicide in front of their class. Are they actually going to care about the laws of guns in schools?
No. Suicides are often spontaneous though, so providing a gun for them to use on impulse is the issue.
There's a metric fuckton of evidence that shows suicidal ideation comes on suddenly and strong. If a teacher at the end of their rope had a gun in class, they might use it. There's not only no guarantee that that teacher would otherwise have a gun, but with this moronic "arm the teachers" bullshit it's probably literally the only situation in which the teacher would have one there with the children present.
Given the lack of teachers with guns around the planet, and the lack of school shootings outside the U.S. I'd say your assessment is just utterly wrong.
The rest of the planet knows it's a stupid idea. We know what the solutions to the American gun violence problem are, because the rest of us have implemented those solutions with success. We do not have this problem, because we accurately assessed the problem; it's unfettered access to guns. That's it. Just don't let gun manufacturers and retailers sell to whomever walks through the door.
Virtually the entirety of the developed world regulates which guns are available to the general public, and the result is that our kids don't get shot in their classrooms.
Great! So you're telling me that not only do we have a school shooter problem, but we're introducing scenarios for people to become school shooters into schools
They can't even trust teachers to, you know, teach our children. I can't believe they're fine with teachers having loaded firearms near the students
Parents may express concern after a few students are executed for tardiness or note-passing. But historically, school policies only change because lawsuits... which of course are paid for by local taxpayers. Yup, they'll pay to have their kids shot. Sad. ;(
Won't be long before a teacher draws a gun on a student somewhere because they saw a lump under their hoodie or something
Beau has an interesting take on this. His perspective is students will find out which teachers have guns and those teachers become the first targets. Not even for shooting, say a kid wants to shoot up a school but doesn't have a gun? They know where to get one now. Is it healthy for a teacher to always suspect they might be stabbed?
Yup. What stops them from jacking the teacher for their weapon was my first thought. You can't be on high alert for 8 hours a day and never turn your back on the kids.
Exactly, it changes how you behave as a teacher. You either secure it or you keep it on you and be suspicious of any kid who comes too close to you. Also, do parents get to know the risks? If your kid is in the class with the gun teacher that puts them a huge target on them. Like I said before, the shooting could start in that room the neutralize the armed teacher before they are ready. What if it doesn't though? A teacher should secure that classroom but now that teacher has to run out of that room all "Action Jackson" leaving roughly 30 kids to fend for themselves.
Stand outside and threaten the parents of course.
The issue here is that the reason you had teachers like that is because of how underfunded the teachers actually are. Granted, drugs and alcohol are basically any persons problem. But generally you had such crap teachers due to the low pay. People who enjoy teaching teach doing something else, not public school.

Wow. Those are some interesting articles. Incompetent gun carrying to say the least.
When I was in school we managed to have access to the catacombs under the school that administration and teacher thought it was not accessible in any way (entrances werewalled)
Totally, and that's not even taking account all the people that want nothing to do with a gun. Would giving your mother or grandma a gun make you feel safer around them? Sure wouldn't for me.
I know right! Like all those times teachers snap and stab kids with scissors or strangle them or grab the nearest heavy object and smash it into their skulls!
