The Idol of You

Poem

I made an idol out of you,

A goddess shaped of clay;

I fashioned her a halo,

And she rose, and flew away.

She shone so high above me,

As a cosmic, holy dove;

And offered me salvation,

In exchange for pious love.

I worshipped her, devoutly,

Kneeling nightly, by my bed;

Repeating every stricture,

And commandment, I was read.

She ordered me to wander,

In the desert, forty years;

My depth of faith was measured

In my suffering and tears.

I reached the promised village,

Where her temple stood, to see;

A deity of flesh and blood,

A person just like me.
