the bridge that burns itself

Poem

who are You

when No One is watching?

i saw

the sickle

leave your scribe

sickness in the body

those stories slashed

over the slight peel of lip

screaming over salt

that mixes the sand

i saw

how the vultures dove nose first

for every feather

your allure

like pretty pink flesh

escaping their scalp

plucking, fucking, coalescing,

dispersing by the breadth

of your wings so spread

to No One

i saw

the empty drawl You spewed;

a story of cells

synapsing the ganglion symposium

loud sounds

your mouth quelled

only to spell again,

again, again

in genetic marquee

We watched

You

undo the carefully placed disorder

how it all burned down

because someone finally spoke of the feeling

that comes before We drown

to mean nothing–

for it to mean,

something

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

Yes! Love this.

Title is what dragged me in. Content kept me around.

No time for a proper critique, but yes! Yes!

I love your title. I’m not qualified to comment on your actual poem, because the whole largiloquent free-word-association thing isn’t the style of thing I usually enjoy. So that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means I’m not the right person to give any sort of useful commentary.

But I love your title SO so much. That by itself is genius.

To me this poem seems to be describing the narrator watching someone else deal with the ramifications of a genetic disorder. The imagery is really well crafted with the sickle, the salt, the vultures, and the "genetic marquee." You lost me at the lines "how it all burned down/ because someone finally spoke of the feeling/ that comes before We drown." Maybe this part could be put in simpler language or further explained? I'm not sure what's going on in that part of the poem. Otherwise, the tone of the poem matches the subject matter really well. Great job!
