Dear Past, Present, Future Lover

Poem

I wrote this for you

I met you before

In my dreams

And my nightmares

I miss you

I love you

I hate you

I wish you were here still again

I wish I never met you yet

Read me to life

Beat me to life

Breathe me to life

I am so much more than the sum of my parts

But they are really nice parts

They’re so enticing

They’re so distracting

Misdirection to fool you

Into forgetting I am a wild thing

Owned by no one

Despite what the collar around my throat says

Search for me

It’s all in print now anyway

First I’d like to say I like the poem a lot. The first part is very cohesive and gets the message across for past, present and future lovers quite well. In the part of ‘I wish’ I feel it gives it a very unique way of connecting the different times but maybe a coma before yet or again so when you are reading it feels like you are saying ‘I wish I never met you’ to the past lover but yet to a future one you don’t want to meet, however as it is I could interpret it as wishing you never met a past lover in the time you did and maybe it would have been better to meet them later on. I got a bit confused after ‘I am so much more…’ but I get the idea that it tells the lovers they do not own me but still I’d wait for them to find me.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda liked the ambiguity of again and yet as maybe both interpretations are true for me. It has mild bdsm overtones and references to the book I just published too. It is in fact all in print. Solidifying the point of no return for my raw, exposed truth. Which let me tell you was kind of a mind f*ck putting it all out there and the unexpected feelings I faced in aftermath.

I agree with the comment about the coma before "yet". But the rest is fire! Great poem. I felt that in my soul.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that.
