Workshop

UPDATED:

A dog stands on a busy street
-- just ribs on legs and low-hung teats --
as if to stop

the workers on their daily drive
to make end's meat. Mid howling cars
and barks of "Bitch!"

a girl picks up a trembling pup;
can count each bump along his spine,
just like his mum.

And like her. Dad won't let her keep
the doggy -- they can barely feed
their own two mouths.

"The dog," says dad, "ain't on his own;
he has a mum -- the lazy bitch
can feed the pup."

OLD VERSION:

A dog stands on a busy street,
all starving ribs on tired legs,
and low-hung teats.

Mid howling cars and barks of
"Bitch!" from hungry drivers
waiting to sup,

a poor girl sees a trembling pup;
can count each bump along his spine,
just like his mum.

And like her. Dad won't let her keep
the doggy -- they can barely feed
their own two mouths.

"The dog," says dad, "ain't on his own;
he has a mum -- the lazy bitch
can feed the pup."
