Try setting down a bunch of wooden frames on top of the road and then picking them up again, should help some

This is the way to go, it will at least flatten all of the partial blocks so you can see where stuff is on a new layer. If you have an auger you can then flatten the rest down and repeat the frame trick. You might end up one or two blocks below the surrounding desert but

This.

When you wanna fill an area with "Flat" space, fill it with frames and pick them up. It can even be made to erase water blocks. I made an underwater base and when it came time to suck out all the water, I tried doing it with empty jars. Took. Fucking. Forever. Then, out if curiosity, I dropped 20 frames and half the room was dry.

Dude I didn’t even know it was possible to make an underwater base… 😳

I used bulletproof glass 2 layers thick. It kind of ruins the view a bit but regular glass will get broken with 1 hit and you'll get flooded.

How do you even survive horde nights in underwater base?

Maybe build with blocks (wood) material and then paint?

NotRainManSorry•

Unfortunately no, not when talking about different block heights like this. I wish they’d add a smoothing tool or something.

With same block heights, you can place frames down on the terrain, which will “flatten” natural curves to a uniform height. However, when dealing with inclines, there’s no way I know of to remove the sense of having discrete steps.

Fuck. I built a cool road just to have to drive around it? Are there any mods out there that can let me smooth this or am I just going to have to slap some wedges in there to make it driveable?

No idea about mods, I don’t keep up with which mods work for which version etc.

You’ll probably need to use some kind of ramps or wedges to smooth it.

The game has 3 kinds of "blocks", first are solid cubes/shapes that you can place or are used in PoIs, second are terrain which are I believe octahedrons, imagine a cube but just chip off the corners and they do blob together, and third are almost the same as second and are used to create top layer of terrain, ie. their final shape is defined by map heightmap and this is impossible to recreate once modified (unless it's by default aligned to grid).

For example if you place a wooden frame over non modified terrain it's shape will snap to grid and you will never be able to revert it.

So that being said, the only way to create a ramp is to use some 2x1 ramp blocks and paint it somehow, with terrain blocks all you can do is 45 degree.

Or you can play around with heightmap and recreate whole chunk (this will wipe any changes made there), but this seems like overkill and require some more knowledge how world is build and saved.

Would be cool to be able to mod the 4x4 with a CAT/backhoe attachment. Dig a hole 4+ blocks at a time. Or just drive the street with a tiller mod like a giant combine and just chew a road across the map.

And a snowcutter for horde night XD

Your best off digging it all down to the same level

As a state certified embankment inspector... yeah, that's the way to go

Can you use a pickaxe or hammer to start chipping away? Not sure if those blocks are like dirt and shrink as you make each hit. Sometimes I do that when landscaping using topsoil and it gets too lumpy or blocky. Just stop before fully destroying a block of course

11
TinyManatees•

They do shrink, however depending on how long the road is that'd be incredibly tedious.

I mean if you play this game, a lot of it is fun and tedious lol. Just gotta put on some music and think about the end result you'll get

welcome to civil engineering. one simply doesn't just "pave a road"

i didn't think this game had this much realism :(

Place wooden frames on top of the pavement. We do this all the time. Hope this helps

nbwallis•

Definitely best to just use blocks for a smooth ride.

As others said, wooden frames, place and pickup. Also make sure everything is level. You can't ramp asphalt and it'll always be a bouncy ride. Dig so everything is level

I would like to take time to say hello to a fellow Ross.

Just explode the road

Or build a bridge

Ihatefallout•

Start hitting it with a pickaxe or any tool. it will slowly shrink, but don’t break it

Pick a spot of land that has the desired height then start placing frame blocks from that spot over to the area you want to make the same height and fill out the area.

your best bet would be to mine out all the weird angles and make sure it's either a normal / or a couple of them instead of a bunch like this. Even out the lines to make them more like speed bumps than this. People suggesting using wooden blocks are not noticing that, that has already happened. This unevenness is because of the blockiness of the game, not the smoothing.

so either reduce the amount of inclines, and make a few smaller inclines, or just one big incline. ALSO just use cement or wood or something and paint it. It's a hell of a lot easier to work with.

Hills are tricky, but there's a few options I know of:

  1. Hit the high points with a pickaxe or auger

  2. Use incline blocks, then paint them as you see fit. Idk if you can match the asphalt texture, but a literal rainbow road or w/e could be fun.

  3. Put in a caution sign (e.g. "Fuck Your Suspension Ahead").

  4. Make it flat, then use blocks as others have said.

  5. Make a jump ramp instead of a road.

  6. Build a wall, paint it Wile E Coyote style

  7. There's a dev terrain tool if you don't mind console commands. I've never used it, but it may help.

The spirit of alpha 6 trying to come back. 😂

If it's on an incline, unfortunately not without a lot of work (ie using a tool or punching)

My advice is to not drive yourself crazy. If you need a smooth ramp, build it with construction blocks, not ground blocks.

Man this is the exact reason why I started using Maptoolz world editor. It's so nice 5o be able to do rwg then bring the entire height map down to the same level, add in some custom roads, mountains/ravines and water sources. I usually end up formatting them all the same tho, snow and mountains in the north, desert and ravines/plateaus in the south, With a large circle of radiation in the middle. Taking height maps from real world locations is neat too I made Oregon the other day it was super fun

Project_K92•

Yep, place and pick up wood frame blocks

As others have said...the drop/pick up of frame shapes will even it up as best as it can be.
