Moon on the Lake
If I could walk on water
I’d take one small step for you;
I’d follow the white till it turned blue
Fall off the dark side of the moon
And hope the campfire songs were true
.
I’d know whether man could step on the sun
And if I could, then I would run
I’d hike the meadow where the lake ran dry
Into the night, if I had time
I’d burn for the sin of calling you mine
.
When I’d come home to the yellow moon
Like a searchlight, combing the ditches for you
I’d try to write beauty, but it’d be too soon
And all I’d have is the ugly truth
.
I’d look back, walking stick in hand
At where the skies burned lake to land
Where choppy waves turned smooth as sand
Maybe then, I’d say goodbye.
