That Smile

Poem

I wrote this back in 2009 originally but have been editing and making editions since then:

Her dear beloved one has gone- / No longer can she see/ That patient loving gentle smile,/ Looking back with glee.

She heard the news few months ago-/ No way she was prepared-/ He had no other fighting chance;/ He no longer could be repaired/

And when they laid him down to rest-/ His face as white as snow,/ She saw that loving gentle smile/ Once more began to glow/

And also when she held his hand,/ His face was pale and cold-/ She felt a slight jump and a shake,/ And then he turned back cold/

And as she went to bed that night/ Feeling sad and kind of wild/ She thought of it again and again/ How she'll always see that smile/

A baker's dozen years have gone/ That unit apropos-/ And still she walks upon the earth/ But forgets the smile's glow/

Though far removed from who she was/ Now further living truth/ She thinks about the sonnets wrote/ While in her damaged youth/

The memories from then are sparse/ An atom in desert sand/ And what's she's able to discern/ Is in her mind's own hands/

Is all she's done and all she's seen/ Reflective of her pain?/ Or from her stumbles, falls, recoveries/ Whose memories are stained?/

She cannot tell nor will she try/ To put her thoughts on trial/ The best that she can hope for is Remembering that smile./
