I hear it again
I hear it again
It’s soft, but caresses the tip of my non cauliflower’d ear
A light breeze skims across my face Grazing the little stubble from an unkept chin
An autumn leaf falls then crinkles under the weight of my weathered leather boot
A twig is next, snapping off in the distance and then once more under my shell shocked soul
My heart begins to rip and tear, and beats begin to deafen the midnight air I once heard whistling an unknown tune
My legs grow weary, so I sit to rest against an old familiar dog wood tree
But the ringing begins to pound, the beats begin to roar and I hear once more the voice like never before
It’s breath reeks, like yesterdays meal caught between two yellowed teeth
An uncomfortable touch, rest it’s sickly hand upon my bony shoulder
I’m petrified, paralyzed and begin to punish myself again
Why go out at night without a light, why leave the comforting cave for which my soul resides
I remember once more why I’ve gone in the first place
My belly aches, my gut wrenches, and what little rations I had have molded and dried
I’m wilting in the night, like a sunflower I’ve turned my back and an algae bloom has covered my gaping hole
But tonight, I won’t turn back
I remember an old tale of elephants caught in a snare
The young elephant fights and writhes with pain to escape its ankled snare
For weeks and months it endures and presses on, hoping to break free from its tightly wound strain
But eventually stops. The elephant grows and becomes more powerful than the snare could ever comprehend
Yet the elephant never breaks free, long lost are its efforts for freedom
Tonight, as I stand from pathetic fetal, I’ve chosen to fight and writhe once more
However, I hear it again
