Dog was served water before I got my paid drink that just sat on the sidelines.

Dog Culture

Visited a brunch cafe for some breakfast and after I ordered, my drink was made but instead of bringing me my drink (that's paid btw), the server proceeded to serve a dog first.

The party with the dog walked in 5 minutes after me. I wasn't offered water either.

The barista made my drink and the server blatantly ignored it to fill up a bowl of water for a dog. When she walked back, I asked her about my drink and said, "So the dog gets a drink before a paying customer? Why is my drink just sitting while you're tending to a dog?!"

She got really red and said she didn't see my drink. I said how did I see it then? It's been sitting for 5 minutes. I wasn't rude, just peeved honestly. Am I that invisible or non priority over an animal?

I'm so over how giddy and ridiculous people act over dogs, especially in restaurants. I see free treats and dogs drinking out of dishes for humans!!!

Where's the same treatment for the customer who patronizes the business that pays you?!

Paying customers > Coprophagic stinking freeloaders. Doesn't matter who is first.

Fluffy can wait, Fluffy Doesn't pay the bills. Better still if Fluffy stays at home.

The trolls are neck deep in here.

If it had been a human that was served before you while your drink sat then it’s perfectly reasonable to say something? I’ve had this same thing happen with a food order. However it was other humans they served before me. They apologized and did not charge for the order.

My drink was a mint lemonade and they actually blend it to make. My drink was definitely served after other humans but not a damn dog. Some items take longer and I understood that but my drink was done and the server made a choice to get the dog some water over bringing me a paid drink.

Just wanted to clarify I'm not an asshole.

You aren't an asshole. I would have asked the server if they washed their hands after serving the dog!

Same! I would have been blunt about it too. I don't want nasty dog slobber/dander/who knows what else all over my drink. Plus there's allergies at play too, and they're just nonchalantly spreading that crap.

I’d also raise a sanitary issue with that because why are you even touching anything a dog has access to then serving people food and drinks? I’d file a complaint with the health department. Disgusting.

Did you cut her tip because of the low quality of service? She definitely deserved a gratuity that was equal to her performance.

Tipping isn't really ingrained in Europe's customer service. It's really only done when service is above and beyond.

If the owners bring dogs out in the heat of summer, then how is it another customer's problem? If dog owners know this wouldn't they carry water for that express reason?

What does your local health code say about dogs in restaurants? They are typically banned unless the dog is a service animal.

Even if the dog IS a service animal, staff have NO responsibility to serve or care for the dog... all they have to do is allow it in there.

I'm in Europe and I'm not familiar with the legalities here. Since I'm a foreigner I'm airing on the side of caution with things like this.

Many restaurants allow dogs out on the patio. Which seems fair, I’ll happily go inside to get away from them.

Well done to you for calling this out. I’m certain many others would’ve kept quiet out of fear/embarrassment.

Because they go ga-ga over dogs but not you.

Yeah that’s pretty silly… They should have made sure your stuff got to you before getting distracted.

Im all for being very polite to food service people… buuuuut i have been that customer left waiting while the server/person behind the counter was distracted by a dog or baby. Especially frustrating when it’s busy and people are waiting. I’m saying this as someone who’s worked at busy coffee shops. Like there were several times when a nutter just came to the pick-up bar and asked for water for their dog… forgoing the line. It might depend place to place, but we always considered that rude as the baristas were just making and handing out the drinks. It’s a fast paced environment and throws off the flow.

EDIT: As a side note… don’t they make those portable water bottle bowls for dogs? More nutters should use those and stop bugging food service workers.

I would have left after talking to a manager.

I hope you reported the restaurant to the health department for having a dog where customers are eating...and did the waitress wash her hands after giving Fido water??

Id probably get that particular server fired, or ask them if it's company policy. And report to the authorities.

I'm not a dick. Who waits over 10 minutes for a lemonade in a restaurant that's not very busy to begin with, only to have a dog served before you? Yeah no. It's more layered than just the dog.

QweenBee5•

You are allowed to not be happy with the way someone serves you. What he said was very, very mild. "Incredibly rude"? Lol you're delusional. What kind of fairy tale world do you live in where someone saying "Why are you serving a dog before a paying customer?" is "incredibly rude". Its more rude, as a server, to serve an animal over a human. Imagine you walk into a place and they ignore you over an animal. That is actually rude. I understand most people lack manners now a days, but just think a bit more about how it would feel to be ignored over the needs of a dog.

Hmm, you keep calling restaurant worker a server but you're angry on their behalf for not being a good one?

16
PriestessRedspyder•

Really? I was a SERVER and bartender for over 20 years myself and SERVER has always been the correct term. Have the overly sensitive snow flakes now decided "restaurant worker" is the new PC term? SMH

Shitbeasts DO NOT belong in restaurants!! As a SERVER I would refuse to serve one and my priority would be the humans.

34
FraudFr0g•

I think you misunderstand my comment. I absolutely agree that dogs don't belong in restaurants. The person I was replying to was saying the OP was disrespectful AF to the server by questioning why they served a literal animal before a paying customer. Doesn't sound like a good server imo that's all I was alluding to.
