My Mother's Garden

Poem

The only constant in nature is change. Leaves never rest the same way they had before the wind moved them. Flowers never bloom the same way they did last spring. Clouds never form the same way they did yesterday.

My mother's garden reflects this aspect. Some years the garden is thick and lush. The variety of colors and smells are enough to overwhelm the senses. Some years the garden is drab and vacant. The deer and rabbits devour every last plant until all that is left is a little stub of a stem. I feel my mother's anger these years.

But you can’t be angry at nature.

Nature must change. It is a constant dance of competition, death, and revival that keeps the cycle of nature afloat.

I reflect this aspect. Some days I am vibrant and productive. I dance around every project and task that must be done. I find myself bright and relaxed. Some days I am tired. I am dark. I am lost. I compete with my own thoughts. I feel my mother's disappointment these days.

But you can’t be disappointed in me.

I am simply a reflection of nature. I am in the leaves of the trees, in the birds that sing, in the clouds that rain.

I am a garden. I am nature. I am changing. I am the same.
