Ok, I was kind of laughing the whole time reading this. Wasn't expecting to relate so hard to a poem set before I was born. I think this really captures college hook ups, and the tone just perfectly captures a half-remembered event from 30 years ago. Very funny, very effective advertisement for "Electric Youth" perfume.

I enjoyed this. I like the conversational tone. I have to admit I’d like to know more about the visuals though; the setting and the protagonists date, so I can picture it more and get more in the poems world.

Ha I think that perfume was only popular for as long as the life of a teen pop star so maybe 18 months starting in 1990 sometime? So there's a very finite time period this could have happened in

It's interesting you wanted visuals - my instinct is to strip away to the basics but perhaps it would be a little so described. The perfume is absolutely the most distinct thing I remember. The main point of this poem was (other than a shout out for "Electric Youth") was people think they're such big adults at like 19 cause they can have sex and drink (drinking age was 18 where I grew up) but in a lot of ways we were still just kids (the perfume, the Fresca, her dad buying her car)

Totally fair enough man. I appreciate that you like to strip it back. Love that you communicated the essence of the moment in the way you wanted to. As said, I really enjoyed reading it.

Edit: you know what, maybe you could describe to me what the perfume smelled like?

These stories you tell always delight me. So, so relatable.

“Children” doing adult things. You spend your whole life wanting to be grown until you’re actually grown. And then life smacks you on your ass. The irony…. I just love it.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.
