Automatic1111 did nothing wrong, some people are trying to destroy it.

Discussion

Here I try to explain the most relevant events of the controversy between NovelAi's and the automatic1111 web ui.

Glossary (Simplified for practical porpouses):

  • NovelAI: A monthly suscription service for AI image generation.
  • Automatic: User creator of the Automatic1111 web Ui.
  • Automatic1111: The version of Stable Diffusion web UI created by u/AUTOMATIC1111 user. One of the most popular web ui's.
  • Emad: Founder and CEO of Stability AI.
  • RNN: Recurrent neural network. (A type of neural network) .
  • Weight: Parameters of some machine learning model.
  • Model: machine learning algorithms that emulate logical decision-making based on available data.

1st event: NovelAI cloned some code from Automatic1111 web ui (according to u/AUTOMATIC1111's side of the events) and modified in order to use it on their business.

Question: Is this legal?

2nd event: NovelAI integrates on his product, something called "Hypernetworks" provide better text generation modules for NovelAI, which are currently based on prompt tuning. According to Novel AI, this is entirely different from "Hypernetworks" RNN, introduced by https://arxiv.org/abs/1609.09106 in 2016.

Question: How true is this?

You can read about this on their official statment here: https://blog.novelai.net/novelai-improvements-on-stable-diffusion-e10d38db82ac Chek out the "Hypernetworks" section.

3rd event: Some Hacker, leaked the NovelAI "hypernetworks" data, and their original NovelAI model. That's an illegal move from the hacker.

You can see the official NovelAI anouncement of this event, here: https://twitter.com/novelaiofficial/status/1578529189741080576

4th event: while all this was happening, u/AUTOMATIC1111 user adds support to this leaked data, in his Automatic1111 web ui, in order to be compatible with the leaked NovelAI's "hypernetworks" system. You can read his side from the events, on his comment right under this post, here:

Thx to u/zackline for this: Comparition between the hypernetworks initialization Automatic User initially implemented, compared to initialization code of the leak: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/23345188/194727441-33f5777f-cb20-4abc-b16b-7d04aedb3373.png

Question: It's illegal adding this hypernet implementation on the Automatic1111 web ui?

5th event: People behind Stable AI, privately accused u/AUTOMATIC1111 of stealing code. AUTOMATIC denies these accusationsand makes his own claim that NovelAI stole his code to begin with.

6th event: Emad himself, implicitly claimed that Automatic1111's actions encouraged the distribution of illegitimately obtained information, but u/AUTOMATIC1111 defends himself against this accusation.

Question: Adding support to "Hypernetworks" RNN to the Automatic1111 web ui, would justify the banning of the web ui itself?

AUTOMATIC was promptly banned from Stable Diffusion after declining to remove his recent updates.

Question: It's a good move from Stability AI?

Please up vote. All people must work in this in order to defend what is ours.

7th Event: Emad, publicly apologizes for his actions against u/AUTOMATIC1111 user.

Edit:

Im posting this, in order to explain everything clearly and in one place, so the new users can use it as a precedent.

Edit 2: Thx for all the people who is providing more information or correcting it, even correcting me. This is our opportunity to let a good precedent of this situation, which is important for the Open Source & AI community. =)

Edit 3: This post is under constant modification. The goal is to clarify the entire story in one place, and as concisely as possible. Thanks to all who have contributed information willingly or unwillingly. If you want to check the original post and comments, use this: https://www.reveddit.com/
