Eldritch Wards Clarification

For the effects of Eldritch Wards (Lich King), it's unclear whether this segment of the Gift

Normal attacks against you that involve bolts of eldritch power or other strictly magical manifestations fizzle uselessly against you if an odd number is rolled on the attack die, even if it would otherwise have hit your Armor Class or have automatically struck you. This defense does not include physical weapon attacks that have been augmented by magic, but it does include wholly emotional or mental normal attacks

would apply against divine Weapon Boosters such as Scythe Hand or Withering Hour. While the initial part of the Gift clearly specifies that it's only talking about low magic and Theurgy, it's less clear as to whether "other strictly magical manifestations" includes divine magic. Has anyone seen Kevin comment on this anywhere?

First no, I haven't talked to Kevin about it. But I have some thoughts that may help.

You are immune to any hostile low magic or theurgy used directly against you.

The sentence you didn't quote has an interesting part: 'used DIRECTLY against you'. That does imply that AoE and indirect magical attacks WOULD work against them! At least other ttrpg (like D&D) divide those types of attacks.

Normal attacks against you that involve bolts of eldritch power or other strictly magical manifestations fizzle uselessly against you if an odd number is rolled on the attack die, even if it would otherwise have hit your Armor Class or have automatically struck you.

What is a 'normal attack'? I think here is a base attack from a npc or monster statblock meant. If they involve (direct) magic, there is a chance the attack fails (btw: Luck could heavily influence those dice rolls), even if the attack would auto-hit you have to roll a die, something the GM could do behind the screen.

This defense does not include physical weapon attacks that have been augmented by magic, ...

So physical attacks that are augmented by magic are excluded. That includes most armed martial weapons (including magical weapons or artifacts) and even unarmed attacks, and nearly all form of physical projectiles (range weapons).

...but it does include wholly emotional or mental normal attacks.

That part includes a bunch of powers, from divine Gifts to true strifes, and could destroy whole plot-lines, BUT thankfully it is also bound to the odd dice-roll.

Without the roll that Lesser Gift would be to much, however with it a GM can use it in their story... the only one PC that isn't victim of the mind control. On the other hand they can always say the Dice-Roll didn't save them from the attack...!

Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah, the technicalities of this Gift have been a big topic of discussion in my group. We've worked out the low magic/theurgy bit of it, but the "normal attack" bit is a new snag we're puzzling over. I think your logic makes sense, but I'm going to keep trying to track down quotes from Kevin for some more solid confirmation

And since I looked at it for another thread, look at Conflicting Gifts, p. 22, to have a simple rule to use in case you aren't sure about the outcome.

What do you mean by divine magic? The Word Sorcery is all divine magic.

Scythe Hand and Wither Hour are just gifts of Words.

IMO a strictly magical manifestation would be any spell used to harm you, such as a Pore of Hell, fireball, magically cast arrows etc.

The other part about emotional and mental attacks sounds like good defenses against psionics, sleep spells, charm etc.

As for the Words in general being magical? I doubt it, however, the fact that he uses "dispel" to nullify certain gifts/miracles makes it sound that way. I once asked him what kinds of power do Godbound uses (magical or cosmic power) and I guess that I used up my questions for the month. He never responded.

You can always find his contact information on here and send him a message. Hopefully he will respond.

I mean precisely what I said when I said divine magic: divine Gifts are magic, just a higher tier of magic than mortal sorcery or Theurgy

I thought you were asking us our opinion. If you already have your mind made up, then what's the point?

I was asking if anyone had a quote from Kevin, to see if he'd commented on this

Has anyone seen Kevin comment on this anywhere?

Though to clarify, I was mostly just responding to your interpretation of divine Gifts not being magic. Manipulating the fabric of reality isn't a mundane process, so it's definitely magic. It's just a question of whether or not it's the type of magic that Eldritch Wards would be able to resist
