Chun Li

I recently got chun li and have played a few games with her as a commander, if I have an instant in my Exile with a kick counter on it when I attack can I cast that same card multiple times or only once?

only once, since each card is only copied once

There's only one of that Card in Exile with a Kick counter.

So, when Chun-Li attack, she can only makes one Card-Copy of that Card. You can only cast that Card-Copy one time.

  • If you did cast the Card-Copy, then it will resolve, or otherwise leave the Stack and cease to exist as the SBA are checked.
  • If you didn't cast the Card-Copy, then it will cease to exist as the SBA are checked.

Either way, the next time Chun-Li attacks, that Card is sill in Exile with a Kick counter, so you repeat the above.

May I follow up? For something like [[Archmage Emeritus]], does Magecraft trigger for both the card being copied and then the card-copy being cast?

An ability that triggers when you "cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell" won't trigger if you copy an instant or sorcery card in exile or in a graveyard (spells exist only on the stack [C.R. 112.1]), but it will trigger when you cast a copy of a card as an instant or sorcery spell (C.R. 112.1b, 707.12).

Thus, such an ability can trigger at most once in this case.

Note that the magecraft ability word, like all ability words, has no game mechanics inherent to it (C.R. 207.2c).

Magecraft only Triggers once time; For the Spell being Cast.

Magecraft triggers for Spells being a Cast, and a Spell being Copied.

707.10. To copy a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack; a copy of a spell isn’t cast and a copy of an activated ability isn’t activated. A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, [..]

Magecraft does not trigger for a Card being Copied.

707.12. An effect that instructs a player to cast a copy of an object (and not just copy a spell) follows the rules for casting spells, except that the copy is created in the same zone the object is in and then cast while another spell or ability is resolving. Casting a copy of an object follows steps 601.2a–h of rule 601, “Casting Spells,” and then the copy becomes cast. Once cast, the copy is a spell on the stack, and just like any other spell it can resolve or be countered.
