was it a dream?

childishly,

i keep wishing your death and everything following it has been a bad dream -

that one morning i will wake up,

you will still be here,

and everything will be the same as it was -

forgetting that,

for you

it was life that was the bad dream

and that

maybe

when the cold water filled your lungs you jerked awake,

safe and warm beneath soft blankets

and that now you are a child again

and nothing bad has happened to you.
