Dig

Poem

I swung my pick Into ground rock hard The sun beat down In that old churchyard And for my baby I’ll carry on A digging

Hands are blistered Tired arms try The sweat drips down And stings my eyes But I’ll fulfil The duty of the living

Cause this hole just Ain’t gonna dig itself

Later today We’ll gather round With words to say As we lower her down And walk away With sorrow Softly spoken

As parents Who’ve just buried their child Who now must walk A thousand miles Not knowing if They’ll ever walk Unbroken

And this hole just Ain’t gonna dig itself
