Internal Tug of War

Poem

I often fight with an imp in my head,

This imp insists on doing things methodically,

On curbing all emotional ice-cream eating,

It’s the idiot who’d rather,

I study the theory of “How-To’s” unto infinity,

than stumble on the twisty path to finding my own thing.

See I know it’s not evil,

It’s just looking out for me.

Optimising for appearances,

cause we’re so often taught that the way you’re perceived,

is more important than how you feel,

especially in school where you’re not even allowed to pee.

And I also know I can be devilishly impatient,

Or bratty, call it what you please.

So maybe the tug of war can only be resolved,

when both of us realise we’re stuck to each other,

so it might as well pop it’s ego and try making peace,

cause I’d rather think in loopy loops than bend the knee.
