Concerns

I know there are a lot of people who worry about weight gain after overeating, but I feel like my doubt has just taken over me. So, I’m 5’1” female and 14 yrs old and I usually eat about 1400 calories everyday. It started since last week where I overate up to 1600-2000 calories. On Sunday I ate 1800 calories, Saturday 1600, Tuesday 1500, Wednesday 2000, Thursday 1600, and yesterday 1500. I did track, but I feel like it might even be off because I kept going for more food. I usually weight 105-106 lbs in the morning but now I weight 108 lbs in the morning. Because my calories have been so inconsistent I can’t tell if I actually gained weight or not or if it’s really water weight like everyone says. For all of these days every morning I was a consistent weight of 108. Does this mean I gained 2 lbs? Every time i eat it goes up to 111 lbs which makes me disheartened. If I go back to eating 1400 calories everyday will my weight go back to 106 in the morning? I’m just really doubtful and confused. Because the 108 won’t go away in the morning I have no idea if it really is water weight anymore. This probably sounds really stupid but I feel like my mind is just constantly repeating the same questions and it’s making me even more unsure. Today I ate 1400 calories like usual but I feel like I did something wrong again and I really did gain weight. My stomach looks more distended at the bottom too. I’ve been having trouble keeping my calories in check for some reason and I’m trying to get back to my normal amount. Also I’m even more confused with different information all at once because some say at my age and height I need only 1400-1600 calories but others say I need 2000.

You're 14, tracking your calories and weight this closely isn't a great idea on its own. Very little of the advice you're going to find applies to you, it assumes a boring adult body while you are still developing. You're in danger of confusing a healthy and natural growth spurt with unhealthy weight gain.

Some of the behavior you've described sounds more like the start of an eating disorder than a healthy relationship with your body. You probably want to talk with a doctor, or at least your parents, about this.

I was very worried about getting an ED before. I’m not particularly really uncomfortable with my body, but I like the weight I’m at right now. I’ll make sure to try and stop tracking so closely thank you!

These sorts of obsessive thought around food are not healthy and like Jolan said, you may want to get in touch with a medical professional or your parents about it.

For a grown adult it is totally normal for their weight to fluctuate daily by several pounds on a variety of factors. Water has weight, food has weight, salt and hormones and stress levels can make you hold onto things differently. But you are still growing and likely will be until you're into your late teens and early twenties. There is a reason that doctors don't advise children worry about dieting or exercising this young with the exception of extraneous circumstances where someone's health is at risk. You don't stay at your 14-year-old weight forever and for most people it is unreasonable and unhealthy to do so.

Right now, just focus on eating what makes your body and mind feel good and if you feel like you need help, there are people and professionals who are willing to help if you decide to ask. Their resources are always open to you <3 best of luck

I have gotten in touch with my doctor before but I found that I doubt things so much to the point where I want every single detail to make sure things will go that way including doctor advice so even though I know what I need to do I still start doubting “what if this isn’t true” and then I mix up a bunch of information. But I’m going to try my best to think in a healthier way thank you!

First thing I would tell you as a guy old enough to be your dad is don’t worry about weight and calories at your age. Eat when you are hungry… don’t over eat… try to focus on healthy foods and allow your body to develop and grow.

Just make sure you remember these habits when you are 30 plus when these issues really become applicable 😀. You don’t need to worry about talking to any doctor… ask your parents if you have questions or feel free to message me too.

Have fun and don’t worry
