If you hear....

Poem

If you hear I'm dying...

We don't have to talk about that

There isn't really all that much to say

I'm not the type to leave things unsaid

Start the day with a clean slate, is my motto

There are other topics

Tell me about that rude cab driver

Or even the nice one that opened your door

There are all types of people, they are fascinating

If you hear I'm dying

Don't worry about my soul

I really doubt there is such a thing

And if I am wrong, which is possible

Mine is fine, really

And certainly don't bring God into it

I found him a long time ago

He's ok, but can be a bit of a jerk

And frankly, not that interesting

If you hear I'm dying

Send me dirty jokes

Nothing crude of course

Use some judgement

But I do enjoy a clever, rude turn of phrase

And for a few seconds I won't be thinking about things

It'll be like coming up for air

Start with a priest and a prostitute in a bar

That stuff is always funny

If you hear I'm dying

No need to bring up the past

I've already lived that

Tell me about your plans

Where you want to go next summer

Likely I've never been there

But I have a good imagination

It's taken me places before

And who knows, it may again.

“Death twitches my ear;

'Live,' he says...

'I'm coming.”

― Virgil

Should add the note...in r/atheist someone asked what to say to a person coming to the end of their life...I suggested....first try listening
