Any tips for leaving a country's market?

Question

I was playing the papal states and became protectorate to russia to utilize their market and all was going well. I was making ass loads of money until I decided I wanted to unite italy. It was about 40 years into the game and my entire economy revolved around the russian market.

I started an independence war and easily won since russia had no actual way to land troops in italy and as soon as I left the market, my economy collapsed. I just couldn't get the supply and demand from my own market to sustain my businesses.

How can I prevent this in the future when playing any country relying on foreign markets?

Unfortunately, you can't totally prevent it. It's the cost of relying on a bigger market. Your economy will turn into chaos for a few years. But you can plan for it, and you can recover.

Build a lot of ports beforehand so that you can quickly set up enough export routes to other countries to replace the loss of demand from Russia. Also have high bureaucracy for trade routes

You might be able to get away without the ports if you have land borders with the other great powers since you won’t need the convoys for their trade routes
