Hotend decision Nov. 2022

V2 Question

Alright so I've done as much research and I've exhausted myself with analysis paralysis on deciding on a hotend for new voron 350mm 2.4 build. I'm getting a magic phoenix kit with stealthburner and canbus.

Just wanna get some thoughts on which one y'all would pick.

Rapido

Thanks - leaning toward that one.

I have a uhf rapido with the volcano CHT and flow 40mm3 all day long I’ve actually printed 1000mms doing vase mode for a rounded corner square, just playing around at .1mm layers. Dropping to a regular Cht for less ooze when printing higher temps but even then at 30-35mm3 it will still haul ass.

I have seen that there isnt official support for the UHF rapido from voron, how did you go about mounting and using it on your printer? I'm debating between the HF and UHF, if its easy to set up the UHF on the 2.4 I will probably go with that.

Facebook users that have not understood that up/down votes are supposed to be used for the relevance of the comment instead of how much they agree/disagree with the post.

This subreddit in general is really downvote heavy for some reason. I've just learned to ignore voting here as it doesn't really mean much.

The larger a community on reddit grows, the more divisive and useless it becomes in my experience.

The Voron community has grown to the point that it's attracting trolls (and those from other communities) who have no purpose here except to disrupt discussions, insult people and generally cause trouble.

You may find that the Discord is better, but it's also infested with those that create drama for fun.

What super-lizard said, but honestly not much changes fast in the hot end world so this question get asked a lot and is pretty thoroughly answered.

I'm going with the Revo ... excellent print quality but then again i don't do HF printing although they are coming out with hf nozzles next year

8
clarkdasharkOP•

I hear ya. My concern with revo is expensive nozzles and limiting flow rate. Otherwise it's a beautiful design.

I just built a printing with a very fast and capable motion system... I want a hotend that can keep up with the squirt factor.

5
bythorsthunder•

Then rapido HF is your best option in my opinion.

2
clarkdasharkOP•

What about this drop effect xg

4
bythorsthunder•

It's not yet officially supported and uses non-standard nozzles. I also don't know much about its performance yet.

2
JohnHue•

Dragon SF with CHT nozzle. 25-30mm^3 /s is HF territory without the long melt zone a lack of extrusion control at lower speeds that comes with that. Still have the possibility to use any other fancy nozzle of you need to.

8
GalvanicGlaze•

Rapido then Dragon HF

Don't know why people are saying Mosquito its not even supported for Voron anymore

8
Kotvic2•

Because they have Mosquito or NF-Crazy on hand from previous version of Voron printers or different printers they want to rebuild?

This is my case. I had custom CoreXY printer based on hypercube and lot of custom design parts and have decided to rebuild it to Voron V2.4.

5
GalvanicGlaze•

Yeah that's fair, but I think OP is looking to buy something. Buying a Mosquito now would be a bit of a headache compared to buying a supported hotend

2
Kotvic2•

No big headache. Only different hotend holder.

I will use this one on my ongoing build.

Mellow NF Crazy HF. Basically a Mosquito magnum without the price tag - and no money to slice. Personally, I’m not against defending your patents - but it’s hard to buy genuine when the Chinese clone performs as well.

You do need to contact Mellow to buy it though. It’s not advertised on AliExpress.

Mellow NF Crazy HF

Just looking at this. That's a blatant ripoff of an American design. no thanks!

1
personalvacuum•

That’s 100% what it is. The slice engineering hate is common in the Voron community, however, because Slice went after one of the key suppliers (importers) for the Voron team in the US. This was the original Dragon vs Mosquito debate as Slice was claiming their patent meant nobody else could bolt the hotend to the heatbreak (the way all the modern ones now do).

Obviously Slice can’t (easily) go after the Chinese clones - but apparently the Voron design team weren’t happy with the way they went after the supplier (demanding profits and threatening expensive litigation if he refused).

The NF Crazy is a direct clone, while the dragon was more of a V6 with the added stress relief of the screws.

The mosquito and mosquito magnum are both top notch though. If you want to support Slice then I’d recommend the magnum :)

I have used a variety of hotends, currently have printers with Rapido HF, Revo, and dragonfly. The Rapido prints fast, heats fast and has been pretty trouble free. Had a clog recently, but it was pretty easy to fix, just ran some nylon through with the nozzle out. The Revo had a nasty clog that was difficult to fix based on the heatbreak/nozzle design. I haven’t used the dragonfly much, but it seems good and I haven’t had any problems with it.

sneakerguy40•

Dragon HF at the minimum, Rapido is probably better with the ceramic heater. Not a lot of video reviews on it tho but the technology seems sound.

5
clarkdasharkOP•

Yea rapido is the one I'm really leaning towards.

4
Absoulute•

Rapido is fantastic, but beware, they are super easy to break. It may be a wise decision to buy some of the Trianglelab heaterblock's on AliExpress. I have yet to figure out what is causing them to break, but the heater pads come off of the ceramic piece, and it's not as simple as just soldering it back on, it need some kind of adhesive to solder it that I haven't looked into yet. I hit 40+ mm3/s though without a CHT nozzle, so there's that. 2 times it was my fault, the other I'm not so sure. I've been fiddling with them a ton though, so your mileage may vary. But long story short, THEY ARE FRAGILE AS FUCK SO BE SUPER CAREFUL WHEN HANDLING IT

4
jimberrino•

I ordered a TL ceramic hotend and while it was working it was great however like you said the contacts to the ceramic heater came loose and didn't maintain a good enough connection to wires causing klipper to error out. Normal solder won't work as the hotend get hotter than the solder melting point which is around 180⁰C. You either need high temperature solder or like an arc welder to attach the wire back to the ceramic heater.

I tested manually holder a separate wire to the hotend contact with 24v and it heat up fine so while it looks connected it's somehow loose.

3
Byr_Genar-HofoenV0•

The recent trend seems to be Rapido HF if you care more about speed, Revo voron if you care more about convenience.

I still really like the V6 because it works well enough and is cheap but it's becoming less popular.

4
sneakerguy40•

Revo for nozzle change is negligible since you still have to heat up the hotend to remove the filament first. The difference of 2 tool to 1 tool change is significant, 1 to tool-less isn't so.

4
Byr_Genar-HofoenV0•

Include a long enough retract in your print_end and you won't have to heat it before changing nozzles.

11
stray_rSwitchwire•

This, do this with all my printers, 6mm is enough. I can do the next print without touching anything or swap filament cold with the latch open and the purge line will sort it.

4
MyHorseIsDeadTrident / V1•

Do you not worry about clogs with a 6mm retract?

2
sneakerguy40•

first sentence mostly corrected, second sentence still stands haha

1
clarkdasharkOP•

Honestly I like my v6 that's on my prusa just fine. 2 handed nozzle changes suck but that's about it.

2
vinnycordeiro•

Then you may want to upgrade to a Dragon. Still V6 hardware, but just one hand nozzle changes.

2
Offshore_Engineer•

I have the rapido HF and it’s been great. Honestly nozzle changes aren’t a big deal, takes maybe 30 seconds with one wrench. The fact that it heats up so quick makes this a non issue.

2
123-bigdaddyv•

Does rapid hf work in stealth burner, or do you a mod for it

2
Offshore_Engineer•

Be advised the rapido UHF version doesn’t work, it’s too long. I don’t really imagine that is needed though, I print 30 mm^3 with the rapido using a 0.6 CHT nozzle

5
stray_rSwitchwire•

I can do 40mm3 with a v6 and a CHT in sunlu abs or polymaker polylite ABS. Either you can go way faster, you're printing really cold or the Rapido isn't all that.

2
Offshore_Engineer•

No issues, there’s an approved printhead in the stealth burner stl directory. I ran it with SB and CW1 and then upgraded to CW2 without any issues.

3
366df•

I bought Rapido HF because it's a nice package. Thermistor and everything is already installed, you get a few nozzles as well. It over Revo so I can use my old nozzles. Dunno about flowrate, didn't look too much into the Revo.

4
chantsnone•

You get a triangle labs or Phaetus? Cuz I only got one nozzzle

1
Myrigs•

Phaetus 3 nozzle

2
chantsnone•

Yeah I got a triangle labs

1
Drak3•

I went with the mosquito magnum

3†
clarkdasharkOP•

I like this option because it uses v6 nozzles.. I have tons of those.

0†
bertusbrewing•

Rapido uses V6 nozzles too

2
UsernameL-F•

Voron doesn’t support slice engineering products anymore. There was a legal dispute with a voron associated re-seller over murky patents.

Personally I would go with a Phaetus dragon SF/HF.

Looking at buying a kit here soon, never heard of the Magic Phoenix kits. I like that you have more control over the parts. How do these compare to LDO and Formbot kits? I notice they use some of their own branded stuff for some parts, are they good?

2
clarkdasharkOP•

Kind of what I noticed... All these kits, even LDO's, all are sourced from China. Magic Phoenix allowed me to customize a kit to my liking. Clockwork2, stealthburner, canbus, etc. With the LDO Kit id have to buy extra components to achieve that. I do believe with LDO kit, you're paying for the better documentation and support.

That being said, magic phoenix is active on discord. I was able to reach out to they guy to add some extra stuff to my kit that wasn't in the kit. He threw it in for cheap. (2x 5015 fans for nevermore)

I haven't built my kit yet, but I feel like I made a good choice. I got the same high quality parts as LDO offers for about $400 less.

2
DoesntFearZeusV2•

FWIW LDO kits for batch 3-4ish are SB/CW1 ready. The newer ones are all supposed to be SB/CW2. Only difference kit wise is the extruder motor. Then just printing/ordering the right printed parts. Also include Klicky and Nevermore parts. It's a pretty complete package. But yeah, there is no customization of whats in the kit besides the minimal your vendor might do.

Mosquito hotend. All day any day. Zero issues on all my printers.
